Jewelry makers or shirt embellishers- a question

If you make jewelry using Swarovski crystals or even embellish shirts, bags or jeans with them, what are your plans? I know they've been failing XRF lead testing and so if you make a product using them, it will be illegal under the law. Are you going to switch to glass or quit your business? CPSC grants 1 year stay of enforcement for children's products!!! Yippee!!!

This is good news but I wouldn't get too excited (although it's hard). Any number of things can still happen to reverse this. Here's a good article: http://overlawyered.com/2009/01/cpsia-cpsc-staff-asks-1-year-enforcement-stay/.

You are still responsible to make sure your products fall below the 600 ppm and the phthlates ban. So get testing results from fabric, ribbon, button, zippers, paint, dyes, etc suppliers. According to Jenifer Taggert, of The Smart Mama, these components may fail lead testing: "rhinestones, crystals (Swarovski), zipper pulls, zipper bases, zipper stops, grommets, snaps, metal closures, pearl or opalescent plastic buttons, vinyl (stabilized with lead) and eyelets. Some screen prints may also fail. "

Please note that if you use paint in finishing toys or use painted metal in your jewelry, you still need 3rd party testing.

Be sure to read Chairman Nord and Commissioner Moore's letter. They further explain their thinking.

Nord is not to blame for CPSIA

Why is Waxman putting ths issue on Chairman Nancy Nord? So he doesn't have to be the bad guy? Seems Chairman Nord tried to raise concerns about this insane law before it was passed. So really this is Waxman's issue and the pressure must be put on him. The CPSC can not do anything with a hearing and direction from the Committee.

There has been talk of taking all "banned" material and sending it to Washington DC. Let them figure out what to do with it. So all the resale shops, Goodwill, Walmart, Target, small boutiques, WAHM's etc send their products. How funny and a great way to get the point across! I'm only kidding of course ;) or maybe not.

Resale shops & goodwill will be impacted?
