JM: Nicki, when did your interest in creating jewelry start?

NICKI: I began designing jewelry shortly after the birth of Gabrielle so about 3 1/2 years ago. I created jewelry to match some of her outfits for special occasions. This led into designing a few pieces for myself, then lead to family and friends. I started designing soldered art pendants in the summer of 2005

JM: How did you learn?

NICKI: I am almost completely self taught. I have a friend who also designs jewelry but she lives on the West coast. She did give me some tips when I first started. I have purchased books and have a few magazine subscriptions to magazines specializing in jewelry design.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

NICKI:I started selling jewelry on eBay February 2005. I have a website that I sell from, www.beyouboutique.com. I sell at craft fairs in the Central Pennsylvania area. I also sell online at Blossom St. and a few other online boutiques. I hope to gain more local business in gift shops in the months to come.

JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay?

NICKI:I sold a very simple child's bracelet done in shades of purple for $8.99. I was so excited!

JM: Where did come up with your name?

NICKI: After weeks of coming up with names and not liking much of any I thought up, Be You just came to me. I wanted something catchy, easy to remember and could be used with my business and website.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

NICKI: I am the founder of Boutique Icing StyleHouse. . We're an all jewelry group, comprised of some of the finest jewelry designers on eBay. Through various message boards on eBay I've gotten to know other jewelry designers. Fall of 2005 I emailed a few asking if they wanted to join a jewelry group and the rest is history. We are all very supportive and helpful of each other. I am so happy to surrounded by such talent.

Recently I was invited to join Wisteria Lane. I guested with the group on a launch and they decided to invite me to join. The group is full of very talented business women. They all inspire me to think outside of the box and come up with new designs on a regular basis. I'm enjoying getting to know everyone better as time passes.

JM: What are your favorite materials to work with?

NICKI: I really like soldering, glass cutting, and working with my art pendants. The possibilities for creativeness are endless which is a good thing. I always am coming up with new ideas. I also really enjoy working with lampwork beads and wire wrapping. I don't like to box myself into one style, I like to keep styles varied a little to keep things fresh.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

NICKI:I would really like to learn how to make lampwork beads. Making my own would allow me to come up with my own color schemes for my designs. As of now, I rely on other designer's color schemes to work with.

JM: Can you tell us about your first job? How much did you earn?

NICKI: My first job was at age 14 at the local Dairy Queen. I think I earned around 3.50/hour. I really didn't like working there at all and luckily 2 weeks into the job I was fired. That was embarrassing but also a blessing.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides making fabulous jewelry?

NICKI:I like working with graphics and scrapbooking with Photoshop. I also like photography, cooking and baking.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

NICKI: I would like to thank all of my customers for their continued support of my designs. Without them, I wouldn't be in business. I'd like to thank my husband for allowing me to vent to him and taking care of our children in the evening to allow me to work on business. Thanks to a wonderful group of friends, the Amazing Mommies, for their encouragement and support of my business. Thank you to my family for supporting me and to my daughter, Gabrielle, for modeling for me when at times she would have rather been doing anything else but modeling. Lastly, thank you Amy at Journal Modiste for this wonderful opportunity to share more about myself and my business. I couldn't be more honored.
