Designer of the Week - Calico Closet

This week get to know Vicki of Calico Closet . She lives in Richland, Washington. She has three boys, 26,24,22.

See Vicki's current eBay auctions: Calico Closet

JM: Vicki, when did you get started sewing and creating?

VICKI: I started machine sewing when I was in the 8th grade. My mom taught me a little bit and then I took it from there. Before that I sewed doll clothes by hand when I was younger.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

VICKI: I started selling on ebay about 5 or 6 years ago. Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) I sell from my website, and an occasional art fair locally. I also have my designs in several boutiques

Before I sold them on ebay I sold at home parties, boutiques and craft fairs. I've been selling my line Calico Closet since 1987 off and on.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

VICKI: Yes, it was a "shabby chic" little 2 piece outfit with a halter sewn from some pink vintage kitty fabric. It sold for 12.99 and I was thrilled! No picture. I think I probably was still scanning my pictures from a "regular" camera back then.

JM: How did come up with your name, Calico Closet ?

VICKI: I chose in the name in 1987 when I was sewing primarily prairie style dress, pillowcase dresses and vintage looking items.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

VICKI: I belong to StudioR.I applied to them in February. I love this group of gals. We work well together and each is very talented in the type of craft they do. Each member is supportive.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

VICKI:Almost any new design. I get very excited about the creative process from drawing board, fabric and completion.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

VICKI: html!!! I struggle with this all the time.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

VICKI: The Mediterranean. My son went on a cruise last year and I fell in love with everything he got to see and do.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

VICKI: Going to garage sales, going to visit our boys, having family get togethers and especially cooking for everyone when they come, occasional flower gardening.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

VICKI:I'm going to Americasmart in August to launch my line full speed ahead into wholesale. I'm very excited about this opportunity. I've been selling wholesale for a few years and enjoy working with the stores. It is very exciting to find out that in some store across the United States my designs are sold to eager customers.
