JM: Carolyn, When did you get started creating bags?

CAROLYN: Well first, I have been sewing since I was a little girl. My Grandmother Mary taught me how to sew on one of her many sewing machines. She owned a custom sewing shop in Canada, and I would spend many hours with her learning about fabrics, notions, and how to sew without using patterns. So, to this day I will look through pattern books, then figure out in my mind how to make something. It can be trial and error, but it usually works out.

I started creating bags last year. I had gone to a “purse party” at a friends house and thought “I could make and sell these,” but I didn’t have the confidence to do it. My good friend Kimberly, who makes beautiful children’s clothing and gifts, which she sells online at Pitter-PatterKids.com, gave me the encouragement and self confidence I needed. She has been a tremendous help and resource to me. I started with tote bags last year, and now that I am using cork fabric (yes it is real), I am making more purses.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on Etsy and do you sell anywhere else besides Etsy?

CAROLYN:I started selling on Etsy this year in January. I had my own website last year, but it was not getting a lot of site traffic. Since I have started selling on Etsy, I have received many custom orders, repeat customers, and have recently been contacted about selling in a boutique!

JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on Etsy?

CAROLYN:Actually, the first sale I had on Etsy was two bags to the same buyer. They were both cork. One a purse, and the other a wristlet. I was so excited!

JM: Where did come up with your name?

CAROLYN:I like to knit, as well as sew, and got into the felting craze last year. I knit, then felt purses, baby booties, and woman’s and children’s hats, which I mainly sell in the winter. Any ways, I thought “whimsical” sounded good with the “felt sew”.

JM: What is your favorite type of bag to create? Why?

CAROLYN: My favorite bag to make right now is a cork purse, wristlet, or tote bag with a zipper. I just mastered how to sew in zippers this past January after years of being afraid of them!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

CAROLYN:I would like to learn how to needle felt, so I could embellish my felted items. I have always wanted to learn stained glass and pottery as well.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

CAROLYN: I have been very fortunate to travel to many places so far. I am from Canada originally, and grew up between Niagara Falls and Toronto. My family now live in Alberta, so I have been to the Rockies many times. I also lived in England for two years in the mid 1990’s, and besides seeing most of the UK, I got to travel to most of the major cities in Europe. I think Australia would have to be my choice.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides creating?

CAROLYN: I like to play the piano, spend time with my family, have lunch with my friends, and watch HGTV.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

CAROLYN: I want to say how grateful I am to my husband Kevin, and my kids for being so supportive in my crafting endeavors.
