JM: Molly, when did you get started sewing and creating?

MOLLY: I started sewing around the age of 6. My older sister and I both taught ourselves to sew. My first sewing machine was a little plastic Singer machine. It had cartridges you popped in and out when you wanted to change thread color. I sewed just about everything on that little machine. Eventually, we joined 4H and learned more advanced sewing techniques. Every summer we would create something new and model it at the county fair. I don't know that my husband even knows that secret! LOL.

Honestly, from a very young age I have been able to look at a garment and inatetly know how it was constructed. That ability led to teaching myself how to drape and make patterns. My grandmother was an amazing seamstress, so I guess some of that just trickled down to me.

JM: When did you start selling your designs and where do you sell?

MOLLY: I started selling on Etsy about a year ago. Although sales have been slow, I love that I'm selling someplace that has a purpose and a great vibe. Everyone on Etsy, both sellers and buyers have been so kind and supportive. I truly believe that this is the direction that the boutique world is heading towards. Etsy has the feeling of shopping in the old downtown district where everyone knows each other and supports each other. It is all about the artist and less about the brand name.

I also have a store on Ebay and actively launch with a wonderful design group, Bijou & Co. (BJAC). I can't say enough about how amazing, loving, talented and supportive these women are. I'm really blessed to be a part of such a great group! Although we have been launching on eBay for the last year, we are now transitioning over to Etsy as well!

You can also find me on several online boutiques and my own website will be launching in the next couple of weeks! I'm so excited to be venturing out into all the different facets of the boutique community. I think to be successful, you have to take risks and pursue many different venues.

If you want to follow my journey from Etsy/eBay designer to the world of manufacturing, take a peak at my blog. I will be sharing all my experiences, both positive and negative. In the boutique world, it has always felt like producing your line is a highly guarded secret. But I feel like there is more then enough business to go around. We should all be working together as a team not in opposition.

JM: How did come up with your name, Molly O Designs?

MOLLY:In my previous life ("before kids"), I worked as the VP of PR/Marketing for a tech company. It was there that everyone who worked with me started to call me Molly O. So, when I decided to turn my hobby and passion into a business I started to focus on the designs that really inspired me. And I kept coming back to the simple and elegant styles of "Jackie O" and Audrey Hepburn. Something just clicked, and I knew Molly O Designs would be the perfect fit for the designs I was dreaming of launching.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

MOLLY:I LOVE to create special occasion dresses. My fabric fabric to work with is dupioni silk. I love how crisp and light it is, but at the same time it drapes beautifully.

I also love taking vintage styles and giving them an update. I truly believe that little girls should dress like little girls for as long as possible. If you look back at the designs in the 40's and 50's, girls wore sweet and simple dresses until they were teenagers. I want to carry that feeling over while giving it a sense of style that translates into today's fashion.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

MOLLY: I'm attempting to teach myself how to sketch. My sketches make sense to me, but if anyone else looked at them they would probably laugh! So, I'm buying every fashion illustration book I can get my hands on and looking into online classes. It is so important to me because I'm beginning to work with a patternmaker and a manufacturer to take my designs to the next level. Right now, I have to physically create my samples for the patternmaker to work with. I would love to be able to show her my sketches so we can talk about the pros and cons of a design without having to spend hours creating the design. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to show everyone my before and after sketches.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

MOLLY:Where do I start?! Paris, or course. Preferably during fashion week. My husband and I want to go to so many places. We had 3 kids in 4 years, the first one arriving 11 months after our wedding. So, we have not had a chance to travel together as much as we would like. I think the next big trip we would like to take is to the Greek Islands.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

MOLLY: The first would obviously be spending time with my kids and my husband. It seems like one of us is always working, so the time we have together as a family is really important to us.

My other passion is dancing! I danced all the way through college and taught dance up until my 3rd pregnancy. Since my youngest was born, I have not stepped foot back in the dance studio. It is something that always calms me and makes me feel amazing. My goal this year is to get back into the studio and start taking classes again.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

MOLLY:2008 is turning out to be an amazing year for me. I have made the decision to go from custom boutique designer to launching my line on a national level. It is such a scarey step, but one that is so incredibly exciting. Being asked to be featured on JM during this time is just icing on the cake!! Journal Modiste was the first site that I found when I began selling my designs online. Every week I would come back to read about each featured designer. I'm so honored to be included amongst such an amazing group of designers. Thank you so much!
