1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I started sewing when I around 6 or 7. My mom, grandmother and aunt are all talented seamstresses and I learned from each of them but especially from sewing lessons that my mom paid my aunt to give my sister and I. I laugh at my first projects…mostly placemats and totes and easy things but my first piece of clothing was a really ruffly dress done in small brown prints (think Little House on the Prairie). I was so proud of that dress.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

About a year ago I started sewing again after a long break from sewing while getting through high-school and college. Having my little girl inspired me.

I have hopes of selling on different sites in the future like Blossom Street. I also have a web site www.eismandesign.com that I may sell clothing from after I take maternity leave but right now it shows many of my past items and links to my current ebay listings.

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

The first thing I made was a pair of embellished overalls using Gymboree's Strawberry Fields fabric. If I remember right they sold for around $30. I was thrilled. Hehe.

3. How did you decide upon your name .

I decided to change my name last year when I started selling my designs. At the time, I frequented the Children's Clothing Boutique Board and asked there for suggestions after telling them that I love designing clothing with a somewhat funky flair. That*funky*boutique was one of the suggestions and it just fit me perfectly. I really wish I had kept track of who came up with the name as I have always wanted to thank them again. It has served me well!

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

I launch once a month with the Boutique Gypsies.

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

That's a tough question because my "favorite thing to create" tends to change from week to week. I get bored easily and often change from dress sets one week to overalls the next and then something different after that. My favorite part of designing is the process itself, not so much a particular article or even type of clothing. I find it very satisfying to be in the process sketching, moving fabrics around, playing with trims, etc. My favorites always have a somewhat funky and casual look. Though I love many styles, I think my daughter inspires the love for a little "funk" in most of what I do…she has quite a little personality and fun-loving clothes seem to suit her better than ruffles and flowers.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers? Why?

My absolute favorite fabrics to work with are those that I don't see anyone else using (that I have seen) for children's clothing. They aren't easy to find! Often these might be something vintage or fabric intended for alternative uses like table linens, etc. Using fabrics that were intended for another purpose really challenges me to be creative--the process of turning a really fabulous table napkin into part of a peasant top or skirt is really fun and satisfying. My favorite fabrics tend to have bold prints and color combinations and are often floral.

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

I have almost half of our basement devoted to my businesses (I also freelance as a graphic and web designer). It is a great space because it has a play room/movie room on the far end. My daughter can play during the day and my husband and I can watch movies etc in the evenings all while I'm working. I just warn him when I hit the appliqué stitch button so he knows to turn up the TV volume. LOL!

I'm pretty neat overall. When I'm in the middle of a busy time it gets a little messy but I like to clean up between projects and only have the things out that I'm working on currently. My supplies are stacked away in a few closets I just had built in.

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

I enjoy anything creative! I like to paint and draw and am also an accomplished potter (hand-built and wheel-thrown). Unfortunately we had to sell my kiln as we could not move it when we relocated to Colorado. One day I'll purchase another one. I have hopes of getting back into painting, drawing, pottery and other areas of fine art as our children get a little older.

Besides art related interests, my husband and I like to mountain bike, hike, and spend time outdoors.

9.Anything else you would like to add?

Thanks for the opportunity to be a featured designer! I've met so many wonderful people through my design endeavors…both buyers and sellers! It really has been a terrific experience for me and I feel very blessed to be a part of it all!
