Designer of the Week - Giraffikiki*Kidz

This week get to know Shelley of Giraffikiki*Kidz . I live in a little town, Baden, about 1 ½ hours outside of Toronto, Canada. My husband & I met while living abroad & came back to Canada & bought the house he grew up in. We are the 4th generation of his family to live in this house." She has a son, Reilly age 3 ½.

JM: Shelley, when did you get started sewing and creating?

SHELLEY: I started sewing in highschool. I took a sewing class where we learned how to make an apron, mine was red gingham with buttons & ric rac sewn all over it. After that I went on to make clothes for myself with my mom's guidance. I am still learning from her! She is an awesome sewer who has 40+ years of experience under her belt so she can pretty much solve any sewing dilemma!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

SHELLEY: I started selling on Ebay just over a year ago so I guess I'm still kind of a newbie here. I also sell on etsy and at a few boutiques.

Before I started selling my designs I actually worked in tax & estate planning (boring!). Funny where we end up. I have always been creative & somewhere along the way kind of got on the wrong path, ?so after Reilly was born I just felt I really wanted to find that side of myself again. With my husband's full support we decided I would leave my career and start designing full time. No regrets here!

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

SHELLEY: The first set I sold was a pink, embroidered cotton halter dress with matching hat & ruffle jeans. It sold for around $40.

JM: Where did come up with your name, Giraffikiki*Kidz ?

SHELLEY:My son just loves the word giraffikiki. He uses it to mean something kind of funny or crazy. I think it is a great word & whenever I use it his smiley little face pops into my head.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

SHELLEY: I just recently joined the Cerises. These gals are fantastic! They have accepted me with open arms & I really respect and admire each one of them as designers and as people. There are some really big hearts in this group. What I like most about the group (besides the wonderful ladies) is it's vision. Stay tuned, ?expect some great things from the Cerises!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

SHELLEY: My favorite thing to create is a mix 'n match set which I do a lot of for personal clients. I guess this shows my practical side. I like to be able to offer several looks with one set. These of course are a nightmare to photograph since my little models are usually done by the time I've shot the first look, lol.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

SHELLEY: I am really working on my photography (see above & my cranky models). I think presenting your design in an effective way makes all the difference. I also love the artistry of photography. I love capturing a moment of beauty. I think about 20 years down the road picking up that photo & reliving the sweetness of that moment or time in your life.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

SHELLEY: Well, it's a tie. Angkor Wat in Cambodia or Machu Picchu in Peru.

JM: So SHELLEY, what other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

SHELLEY:I love reading, swimming, cottaging and spending time with our extended family most of which live within 5 - 10 minutes of us. Also love coffee dates with the girlfriends!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

SHELLEY: Thank you so much for featuring me! It is an honor to be amongst the ranks of former featured designers.
