Designer of the Week - Girlie Girl Bowtique
This week get to know Shannon Hovater of Girlie Girl Bowtique.
She lives in Port Orchard, WA with her husband and daughter Farris who is 2 years old.
JM: Shannon, when did your interest in bow-making start?
SHANNON: After my daughter was born, I discovered EBay's boutique community. I wanted to make adorable little outfits for my dd too, but I had no idea how to sew or even a sewing machine. So, instead I decided to try out making hair bows.
JM: How did you learn?
SHANNON:I bought the Cutey-pie Clips instructions on EBay and practiced, a LOT.
JM: What should we know about bow-making?
SHANNON: It's harder than it looks, LOL! Just like making clothing or jewelry, it takes a lot of time, patience, and practice to become really good at it and develop your own style.
JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?
SHANNON:I started selling bows on eBay a year and a half ago. I sell on my website, www.girliegirlbowtique.com and I share a Shoppe with Michelle on www.blossomst.com. Also, www.toddleposh.com and recently www.custommom.com.
JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay?
SHANNON: The first item I sold on EBay was a set of korkers bows. They probably sold for around 5 bucks, and I was ecstatic LOL.
JM: Where did come up with your name?
SHANNON:I think it was one of those things that just came to me at 3am when I couldn't sleep.
JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?
SHANNON: I am in the design groups 7th Ave StyleHouse. . Members from both groups had purchased from me previously and I got to know some of the gals better through various Yahoo chat loops. What I like most about both of my design groups, is the high quality workmanship that I know all the ladies put into their designs and also, that every one has worked so hard to develop their own distinctive look. Plus, they always listen and give a hug when I need to whine hehe.
JM: What are your favorite materials to work with?
SHANNON: I work mostly with grosgrain ribbon but I am always looking for something new and different to add to my bows. My latest thing, is buttons. I can't get enough buttons lol. Of course, people have put buttons on bows before. To me, it's all about doing it a little differently. I think it's the combination of layers, folds, ribbons, and buttons that all together give my bows a different look.
JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?
SHANNON: I'd like to learn to sew someday but I'm not sure when. There is not enough time in the day as it is.
JM: Can you tell us about your first job? How much did you earn?
SHANNON: My first job was when I was 17. It was through a temp agency, graveyard shift at Johnny's Seasoning Salt factory lol. It was pretty awful. I believe all I did was put empty plastic bottles on a conveyor belt for 10 hours. The only thing I brought away from this experience was, Johnny's Seasoning Salt is one tough smell to get rid of. I had to throw out all the clothes I wore that night, even my shoes!
JM: What other things do you enjoy besides making great bows?
SHANNON: Spending time with my family, watching movies, and that sort of thing.
JM: Anything else you would like to add?
SHANNON: I'd like to thank you Amy for featuring me on Journal Modiste, it is such an honor! Also, a shout out to my groupies hehe, 7Ave and Stylehouse rock :D
Do you have a question that you are dying to ask Shannon? Comment about something she said or designed? Post it here and she will answer it!
