Designer of the Week - Hip Clips

This week get to know A.K. Richards of Hip Clips.

She lives in St. Louis, MO with her husband and three children, Toby--4, Gabe--2, Lucy--11mos.

See A.K.'s current eBay auctions: Hip Clips and add Hip Clips to your favorite eBay sellers list: Click Here:

JM: Where did you get the idea for Hip Clips, they are so cute and unique?

A.K.: Thank you. A neighbor bought me some small bows on alligator clips and they were one of the few things that stayed in Lucy's hair. I found out how much they cost and decided to make them myself. I struggled with my first bows, it took many tries to figure out the right twists and folds to make them look just right. But, through those trials I saw possibilities in the ribbon and I thought hmm, I bet I could make a butterfly and I did. Then it was a flower and a bee and a ladybug. Friends and family encouraged me to sell my little clips and thus Hip Clips was born.

JM: How did you learn?

A.K.: Practice and lots of it. I'd never worked with ribbon before so I think that gave me an advantage. I just looked at it as a medium like paint or clay and that allowed me to break out of the mold so to speak.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

A.K.:I listed my first auction at the end of June (2006), and boy was I nervous. I had no idea if there would be any interest is these silly little creations of mine. I now sell to a few boutiques and also have a website under construction: www.hipclipsboutique.com

JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay?

A.K.:Yes, it was a dragonfly, it sold for $2.04 (lucky bidder :)

JM: Where did come up with your name?

A.K.: It just seemed to fit the product , and I didn't really have any alternatives in mind.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

A.K.: I belong to CityGirls. They recruited me. It's small, friendly and filled with a talented group of women.

JM: What are your favorite materials to work with?

A.K.: Grosgrain ribbon for the business, but I love to paint and draw as well.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

A.K.:To sew! I covet all the beautiful boutique clothing and bags that are out there. I think sewing is also a very useful life skill.

JM: Can you tell us about your first job? How much did you earn?

A.K.: Other than babysitting, it was grooming polo ponies. I think I made $5/hr. What's not embarrassing about being 15, covered in horse manure and surrounded by good looking guys? ;-)

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides making great bows?

A.K.:Traveling, being outdoors with family and friends, watching and playing sports, reading a good book and eating an exquisite meal (that I didn't have to cook).

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for the opportunity to share a little about me and Hip Clips!

Your clips are so original and creative. I am so completely and overwhelmingly envious of your ability to see those "creatures" as you call them in the ribbon! Beautiful work...
