JM: Kirsten, when did you get started sewing and creating?

KIRSTEN: I started sewing when I was 13. I was trying out for cheerleading and wanted to wear a cheerleading outfit. My mom found me a sewing machine at a garage sale. She bought me a pattern for a cheerleading uniform and we made it together. I formally learned how to sew in home ec., however an aunt taught me the finer points to constructing quality items. I made a lot of my clothing in high school. I was a teen in the 80’s and was a big fan of punk rock, so I was able to get really creative. I have many books on different sewing techniques and will try anything. I have had 6 six machines over the last 25 years. I literally sew them to death! My husband bought me a beautiful Janome MC9500 for my birthday. I have a serger, but do mostly French seams. I love how they look. I have an old Singer that I park my ruffler foot on. It gets lots use.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

KIRSTEN: I have been selling my designs on Ebay for about a year. I sell on Blossom St. (I have a Pavilion store) and through my website, Kirstens-Kreations.com.

JM: What did you do before eBay?

KIRSTEN:Prior to Ebay, I sold to parents from my children’s school and neighbors. I made primarily Halloween costumes (many princesses, LOL) and started taking orders in June. I packed up my sewing for many years and started again right before Olivia was born. Initially I made diaper bags.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

KIRSTEN: The first outfit I sold on Ebay was a little top and capris and I have searched my hard drive and just can’t locate it. (Had a hard drive crash not long after) It sold for $30. I made just enough to cover the cost of the fabric and the Ebay fees, but it felt good anyway. The first item I made to sell on Ebay was a diaper bag and it sold for $40 and I was thrilled!

JM: How did come up with your name, Kirsten's Kreations?

KIRSTEN: My daughters chose the name.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

KIRSTEN: Yes, Little Prince and Princess Designs (LPPD). My cousin Kim and I and another friend started the group because we wanted to work together and find others who felt it was important to provide not only visually appealing designs but also quality products. I love my group mates. What I like most about these ladies is that we are like a little family. There is lots of love in this group.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

KIRSTEN: I love creating feminine girly sets. My little Olivia is my last baby and I just enjoy dressing her from top to bottom in clothing that makes people stop and look.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

KIRSTEN: I would love to learn how to make Greek pastries, specifically baklava. I can make basic Greek cookies, but not the hard stuff. My husband’s mother sends them a few times a year, but when she is gone, where will they come from? I am not Greek, but my children are and I would like to continue to make these things for them and my husband. Working with filo dough is a real skill.

JM: What was your first job? How much did you earn?

KIRSTEN: My first job was at the Broadway Deli (part of the Broadway store chain). I made expensive foofoo sandwiches, served unique pastas and made endless coffee drinks and got a nice 20% discount in the store! I was 16 and I made $3.65 an hour.

JM: Was there an embarrassing moment you remember from that job?

KIRSTEN:My most embarrassing moment was pretty hilarious. I was recruited into the store’s fashion show. I was tall and skinny, but had no modeling experience and could barely walk in heals, but had to. I had my tight little mini skirt (the 80’s), my big hair and my high healed shoes. Well to make a long story short, I fell off the runway into the first row of the audience. I ran away crying. LOL!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

KIRSTEN: I love to watch movies. They know me at Blockbuster! We have family night on Friday. We get a family movie, loads of popcorn and candy. I watch at least three movies a week! LOL The scarier the better!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

KIRSTEN:I would like to thank JM for featuring me this week. It is a true honor. I would also like to shout out a “hey” to my girls in the group! I love you ladies! I would also like to thank my husband for building me an awesome studio! It was a lot of work, and I just want him to know I appreciate him.
