1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I remember taking my first sewing class around the age of 10. It was the late eighties so therefore all we made were these stretch knit outfits that were truly awful. I’ve always loved crafty things and working with my hands. My entrepreneurial spirit emerged when I was 12 and sold angel pins and necklaces to a gift retailer. After learning the basics of sewing, I lost interest for a while and took up decorative painting. When I had my first baby I started sewing again and then taught myself how to quilt when I had my second child. The only real formal instruction I’ve received is from taking smocking classes which I loved. I just can’t find enough time in the day to do everything that catches my fancy.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

Well, I tried selling my baby quilts on ebay in Spring, 2004. I knew nothing about templates or presentation so I didn’t have much success. I stumbled upon the ebay boutique world and knew it was for me. Right now I only sell on ebay and love the flexibility it provides. Before selling on ebay, I did custom work and got business through word of mouth.

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

Yes, I remember because it wasn’t that long ago. I started selling clothing a few months ago and the first thing I offered was a swing dress with bloomers set and a cloche style hat with a fabric flower. It sold for $44 and I was so happy because I got great feedback from people about it.

3. How did you decide upon your name .

My husband and close friends have always called me Lizzie. When we had our little girl, everyone in my family said she looked just like me as a baby. She is a “Little Lizzie”. I thought it was the perfect name for my business.

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

Not right now. I’ve had some really nice ladies invite me to join different groups but I just opened an ebay store and really need to concentrate on building my inventory. I love the idea of a design group though, so maybe sometime in the future I will join one.

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

I don’t really have a favorite. I start with a fabric that I love and it usually gives me the inspiration to create the outfit. One of my favorite things to do is to add hand-stitched elements to my clothing because it makes the outfits very unique. I want my clothing to capture the fun of childhood and to show off the personality of the child that wears it without overwhelming them.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers? Why?

All the usual suspects, Michael Miller, Amy Butler, Alexander Henry. I love the softness chenille adds to my quilts. You can probably tell that I love polka dots by looking at my store and almost any of the sets I make. I think I may have to seek a polka-dot-anonymous group soon. Oh, and I love the minky chenille. It is unbelievably soft. I’ve made a few blankets with it and now my daughter will not sleep without one.

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

I’m very fortunate to have a space completely devoted to sewing. The lady that lived in our house before us was a painter and she added a studio on that is 10x20.I was thrilled when a local Joann’s fabric store was closing and I was able to buy two of their large cutting tables. My husband was dismayed because it was quite a job getting them home and taking them apart to get them in the house. I love them because I can really spread fabric out and they have a ton of storage. Depending on what day you peek in my studio, it could be straight or completely covered in fabric. I usually try get it organized before I start a new project. I sew whenever I get a chance. During the day I usually put Claire in her playpen in my studio and try to sew a bit while she plays and also like most of the other moms, I sew late at night.

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

I love just hanging out with my family and friends. My husband and I have jumped on the “Texas Hold ‘Em” bandwagon and are having fun playing poker together. I always enjoy planning parties and showers and usually do the flowers for a couple weddings a year. If it involves designing and creating, I jump right in.

9. Anything else you would like to add?

Selling on ebay has been a wonderful experience, because I can’t think of any other venue where you get such immediate feedback and response/support. Just in the short months that I’ve been selling, I have learned so much valuable information from customers and other designers. My children are really the source of my inspiration – seeing them outfitted in fun clothes gets me inspired to create more! I am very grateful for the support of my husband, friends, family and most important of all, my customers!
