Designer of the Week - Moppets Closets
This week get to know Christi of Moppets Closets.
"We just moved to a little community in North Alabama. After spending 2 years in a tourist beach area, this is a huge change!"
She and her husband have 4 children. Two boys (11 and 8) and two girls (10 and almost 3).
JM: Christi, when did your interest in creating jewelry start?
CHRISTI: My mom is a huge jewelry fanatic and I think I was born with an interest. Growing up I was finding jewelry to take apart and turn into something else that was my own style.
JM:How did you learn?
CHRISTI:Trial and error! I have this habit of taking things apart to learn how they were designed. I don't think I have a single store bought piece of jewelry that hasn't been disassembled.
JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?
CHRISTI:It's been about 3 years, I think. My daughter had a sleepover and we made bracelets as party favors. Some of the parents asked for more and it just grew from there. I had been selling clothing for years on eBay and decided to give my jewelry a whirl. Eventually I began listing my adult jewelry as well - but I still keep more for myself than I list!
I also have stores at Boutique Village and Etsy.com. I sell to several local boutiques, as well as to a few wonderful boutique owners I have met through eBay.
JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay?
CHRISTI:I bit the bullet and listed 20 bracelets all at once. I sold all but four of them. Nothing went over $18. lol I was thrilled!
JM: Where did come up with your name?
CHRISTI: MoppetsClosets was perfect when I was selling boutique clothing. 3 of my children have wild, curly hair and I have always called them my moppets. I liked it so much, I never changed it when I started selling jewelry.
JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?
JM: What are your favorite materials to work with?
CHRISTI:I love flowers! I use them constantly and have to hold myself back. I love vintage beads and spend way too much time hunting them down. If I can manage to drill a hole in it, I will turn just about anything into a charm!
JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?
CHRISTI:I would love to improve my lampworking skills! I've been dabbling at it for a couple of years, but just can't seem to improve beyond a basic spacer bead. I have thrown away a lot of money working with PMC - a silver clay that fires to Sterling Silver. One day I would like to take a class to learn to work with it more effectively. I have a Christmas list full of supplies I would love to have to learn silver casting & glass fusing. If only there were more hours in the day!
JM: What was your first job? ?
CHRISTI: My first job was teaching a low impact aerobics/body sculpture class at 16. It paid $5 an hour and was so hard!!! No amount of money would ever get me to do that again!
JM: What other things do you enjoy besides making fabulous jewelry?
CHRISTI: I spend most of my time with my family. My children are so wonderful and I want to enjoy being with them while they still want me around! I am a room mom at school and volunteer my time when they need it.
Three of my children are in school, but I have one at home with me during the day. Molly is active and inquisitive. Our days are spent reading book after book, coloring, painting and playing. Fortunately, she loves beads and jewelry as much as I do, so she will sit with me while I work. She always manages to get a new piece of jewelry out of the deal!
We recently bought a small horse farm and that has kept me incredibly busy. In the last 2 months I have found myself driving a tractor and shoveling horse stalls - things I never imagined I would ever do!
JM: Anything else you would like to add?
CHRISTI: Thank you so much for featuring me on JM! I want to give a big shout out to the ICING and SilverMoon Boutique girls. Thanks for all the support and inspiration!
And I can't forget my wonderful customers! My buyers are such a friendly group of people - they keep me going
