Designer of the Week - Pogibabies

This week get to know Charissa of Pogibabies . She lives in Brockton, MA with her husband and 3 year old daughter.

Current Etsy listings: Pogibabies

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

CHARISSA: I remember making a mini duffel bag in a high-school home economics class, but that is about all the formal training I have. I basically am self-taught. I really started getting into sewing when I was pregnant...3years ago.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on Etsy?

CHARISSA:I began selling on Etsy in December 2006 after talking with a fellow vendor at a craft show. I am a regular vendor at the SOWA Open Market here in Boston on Sundays. This will be my second year attending that show. I have a few of my items in a boutique called Rhythm + Pink in Rhode Island, and also one boutique in Boston called Tadpole.

JM: You have such a unique style. What inspires you?

CHARISSA:My daughter inspires me. She is such a fun and free soul. My designs stem from my wanting something new and different for her. When she was a baby I always loved having something different, that you wouldn't find in the local baby superstore. She is not a baby anymore...but I love to offer that different option to other new moms.

JM: How did you decide upon your name?

CHARISSA: It literally means "handsome babies". Although most of my items are for girls not boys, go figure. The term pogi in Filipino means handsome and I paired it with the word babies. I chose this for two reasons: it reflects my background, and pogi is just a fun word to say! (pronounced poe - ghee)

JM: What is your favorite thing to create?

CHARISSA:Of all my items I'd have to say that my favorite to create are the PogiPods (pacifier totes). I love them because they are so useful, they are different, and when making them I can be creative in what I embellish them with.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

CHARISSA: Oh gosh, I would love to learn about fixing cars. I have the basics down like changing a flat, or putting air in the tires. I'd love to know a lot more about that heap of metal though! I'd also love to pass that on to my daughter. Empower her to take on anything, even a "man's job"

JM:If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

CHARISSA:I would just love to visit Spain with all the beautiful architecture and artwork there.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

CHARISSA:Spending time with my family is always a treat. I enjoy drawing and painting, and I also love to learn how to cook things other than mac n cheese!

Anything else you would like to add?

CHARISSA:This was so much fun! Thanks a bunch for allowing me this opportunity.
