Designer of the Week - PrincessTomato

This week get to know Teri of PrincessTomato.

She lives amidst the cows and corn in rural South Dakota with her husband and two kids, Maddi is 6, and Jake is 5.

See Teri's current eBay auctions: PrincessTomato and add PrincessTomato to your favorite eBay sellers list: Click Here:

JM: Teri, when did your interest in painting start?

TERI: I have loved drawing and painting for as long as I can remember.

JM: Are there other artists that inspire you??

TERI:I love Joan Miro and Gustav Klimpt's work.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

TERI:Before I started selling on ebay, I lived in Phoenix, where there are lots of galleries and art culture. It was fun being part of that. I also worked as a designer at Phoenix Art Press where I learned a lot.

After we moved back to the midwest, I tried to sell my art on ebay. Right away I found that people seemed to be more willing to pay money for an outfit than for a painting on paper or canvas, so I thought I would give it a try!

Currently, I sell on ebay, www.blossomst.com, and my own website www.princesstomato.com . I do my best to take on customs, but it is hard to keep that list down to a reasonable number without having people wait too long.

JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay?

TERI:I think it was one of my kitty designs. I paid about 75 dollars for this vintage romper pattern, stayed up all night with the seam ripper making the outfit to paint the kitty on. It sold for like $45 and I even made a second chance offer since I was so glad it sold! My husband thought I had lost my mind, but I felt I was "onto" something. As soon as I opted to focus just on the painting part, he believed me. He still laughs when he sees me near the sewing machine.

JM: Where did come up with your name?

TERI:My grandpa loved tomatoes, so for some odd reason I wanted to use that. He also used to call me "princess" (well, actually he called me "Miss America", but since that didnt sound right I went with "princess." LOL)

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

TERI: I recently joined the Clovergirls I love the coziness of a small group. I am also part of WDAS, a large group of artists.

JM: What are your favorite thing to paint?

TERI: My favorite thing to paint would have to be things like my whimsical animals and characters: zebras, giraffes, monkeys, kitties, fairies, butterflies, etc...

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

TERI: I would like to learn how to do some web design and become more proficient at html so I could be more of a help to others (and to myself!). I would also like to learn how to weld so I could make funky furniture. Oh, and I would like to learn how to use my Photoshop CS, too.

JM: Can you tell us about your first job? How much did you earn?

TERI: My first job was cleaning golf clubs at the local country club. It was actually a fun job, and lots of my good friends worked there. I made 3.35/hr I believe. We did get tips, which was nice. I remember riding my Moped to work. Most embarrassing moment? The clubhouse was already locked up one night and "nature was calling me." I ended up having to go down under the bridge. It was terrifying, because I kept imagining that someone was going to see me. As far as I know, no one saw, but it still embarrassing to even think about!!

If it's ok, I would like to add a story that sticks in my mind from that job. I got to see one of the members, who was a respected business owner, miss a shot on the 18th hole. He proceeded to take that putter and beat the crud out of their golf cart! It was quite a sight! Another day, a guy literally threw his club INTO the river! I guess men can be just as dramatic as women when they want to be! :)

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides painting?

TERI: Like everyone else I am sure, spending time with family is at the top of the list. I LOVE reading children's books, too. When I grow up, I would love to have my own stories published... I would love to illustrate children's books. I get so excited when I take steps toward those goals.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

TERI: A big thanks to JournalModiste for putting this site together. The boutique world on ebay has grown so much in the past few years. It is great to have so much information in one place. Also, thanks to all the awesome customers and people who take the time to bid and to email me about my work. It really helps encourage me to do my best :)
