JM: Amanda, when did you get started creating and who taught you?

AMANDA: My mother! She was dedicated to keeping the arts alive with me. I have been in the performing arts my entire life! I have been professionally trained in tap, jazz, pointe, and ballet. Between taking and teaching classes, I have been dancing for more than twenty years. For those of us who have performed, whether it be professional, school years, collegiate, or on a daily basis at home…you know there are times you have to work with what you have. I have created many costumes out of scarce and random materials! That is really where it all began. You never know where the “creative mind” can lead you! And then of course having two little princesses helped me out along the way!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

AMANDA:I started selling on eBay just recently, October 2005. The majority of my sales come from local children’s boutiques, ballet companies, and my web site. EBay has really helped me advertise to the online world. Before having my children and getting really serious about Tutu Couture, I was a teacher. I taught first grade for 6 years, I miss it at times but would never give up the time I have at home with my girls at this early age. By not teaching, I have had the opportunity to become more serious and busy with Tutu Couture.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

AMANDA: Yes, it is still a best seller!! The classic, simplistic, and timeless light pink tutu with rhinestones. It sold for $25.00.

JM: How did come up with your name, TuTu Couture?

AMANDA: Tutu Couture…when only the best will do. Simply, the name says it all…tutu 1. the net skirt worn by ballerinas. It can either be long or short. A Tutu is a skirt worn as a costume. It might be single layer, hanging down, or multiple layers starched and strutting out..couture - 1. The business of designing, making, and selling highly fashionable, usually custom-made clothing

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

AMANDA: Yes, proudly, ODODtoo. I got started by receiving this wonderful email telling me the group’s thoughts and feelings about my product and presentation, asking me to join. What I like the most about ODODtoo is the integrity of the women. These women are intelligent, talented, kind, creative, and fun! There are so many of us creating and selling the same and/or similar product yet amazingly come together to form this professional bond. I’m honored to be part of them. I am also a part of ABCD. The women running ABCD are hard working, dedicated, and focused! ABCD has just begun and I can only imagine where it will

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

AMANDA: Tutus! I love playing with the design, adding new embellishments to keep up with trends and keeping the classic traditional “ballet” look alive. I also enjoy working with the fullness and length to create different looks.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

AMANDA: Photography and more experience in interior design. I have dabbled around with both but would love to know more.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

AMANDA: Paris, I am a true romantic!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

AMANDA: Decorating, traveling, shopping and putting my education background to work with my children. I never get a chance to forget how exciting and absorbent a young mind is.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

AMANDA: I guess I have mentioned everyone but my husband!!! Eric and I have been married for 6 years. He is a Microbiologist and owns his own business. He has been nothing but supportive over the years with my business. That, is a true blessing.
