Designer of the Week - Pink Willow Designs

This week meet Anji Masse of Pink Willow. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband and two children; Stone,8 and River, 5.

See Anji's current eBay auctions: Pink Willow and add Pink Willow Designs to your favorite eBay sellers list: Click Here:

JM: When did you get started crocheting?

ANJI: I started crocheting around the age of 6. My mom and my grandmother taught me - I would watch them making all these cool toys and I wanted to make my own! I never really did make any toys. I was the only girl in my high school toting around yarn and hooks - I would crochet in the halls between classes!

JM: What are your favorite types of yarn to work with?

ANJI: Oh, I don't think I could choose a favorite! I love bright colors, novelty yarns and any kind of yarn that doesn't look like yarn - Cascade has a ribbon yarn that makes me think of torn tee shirts. The tree hugger in me absolutely loves the organic cotton I've been working with lately - it is so soft and comes in beautiful and natural dye-free shades. I could spend all day in the yarn store!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

ANJI: I sell on eBay and Blossom Street. Lisa Schaffer, owner of Blossom Street, will always have my endless, undying gratitude. I had just started to think about selling my items on eBay at the time that Blossom Street opened. If it was not for her, I don't know that I would be doing this today. I was so fortunate and so honored to be offered a shoppe on Blossom Street when it opened. I can't thank her enough for taking a chance with me before I had sold a thing! I started listing on eBay shortly afterwards (although I didn't start selling for a long time after that!)

What did you do before eBay?

ANJI:Life before eBay consisted of cleaning the house and chasing the kids.... and it still does, but I'm crocheting more and the kids are older and need less chasing!

JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay? How much did it sell for?

ANJI: If you can believe it (and if you know me, you'll believe it) I don't remember! I do remember the first item I sold on Blossom Street - it was my Autumn Sunset Patchwork Beanie, which sold for $18

JM: How did come up with your name, Pink Willow Designs?

ANJI:Not a very exciting story! I was Pink Star Designs (named for my tee shirt with the pink star on it, lol), and I wanted to register a domain name. I tried every variation of Pink Star I could think of, but everything was taken. The website suggested Pink Willow as an alternative and I fell in love. I love willow trees and it seemed so much more "me". Plus, I was able to register my domain :)

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

ANJI: I am a proud member of Spark Fashions When the group I was in previously split up, a few of us decided to stick together and start Spark. We are a small group with some seriously awesome designers! I love so many things about being a part of Spark - we work well together, we inspire each other, we all have different styles and talents and personalities - but what I like most about being a part of this amazing group of women is the friendships I've made.

JM: What is your favorite thing to create?

ANJI:I'm having a lot of fun with halter tops lately! They are so summery, and the possibilities for style and color are endless, plus they work up quickly. I also really love ponchos - pretty much for the same reasons. Patchwork beanie hats are always a favorite, too - I love granny squares (so 1970's!) and combining colors, so these are fun to make and use up a lot of my leftover yarns!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

ANJI: I want to learn to sew! I've never used a sewing machine in my life (gasp!) and I'm quite intimidated by the things, but I just LOVE designing and I think it would expand my horizons immensely! At the very least, I'd like to be able to add ruffles to the bottoms of River's jeans :)

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

ANJI: I'm not much of a traveller - I've only left New England twice! - but I have family members and friends - some of who I have never met in person - all over the country that I would love to have coffee with!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides creating?

ANJI: My favorite thing in the world is just hanging out and being silly with my kids! I also love reading, painting, drawing, cross stitch, knitting, iced caramel macchiatos, getting together with friends, playing on Pogo.com, shopping at thrift stores, and singing in the car!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

ANJI:I'm so thrilled and honored to be Designer of the Week - Thank you so much for this opportunity! I'd also like to thank my kids who (usually) behave so well when I'm behind on orders and spend the afternoon crocheting, and my totally awesome husband, without whom I'd not be able to go to work with my feet up watching Oprah!
