JM: Kirsten, when did your interest in creating jewelry start?

KIRSTEN: I've been creating jewelry since high school. I had my ears pierced all the way up, and needed to bring more attention to it, so created goofy earrings out of lego people, rubber aliens from gumball machines, safety pins, finger puppets... pretty weird stuff. My extravagant nature landed me in a fine arts university, where I thought I was going to be a painter, but low and behold, ended up in the jewelry department. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in jewelry design from Temple University, Tyler School of Art, and have been working in that field ever since. I love it, am always thinking about my next design, and am so grateful to God for my artistic gifts!

JM:How did you learn?

KIRSTEN:Initially, I learned through trial and error. Then formally at the college level. Then back to trial and error again! I am always learning.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

KIRSTEN:I started selling my jewelry on eBay in February of 2004. I have a website, www.winipoofun.com, through which I post daily updates on what's new at winipoo. I am a designer with Cherry Tree Avenue, www.cherrytreeavenue.com, a direct sales boutique clothing and accessories company. I also sell locally at arts and craft fairs. When the kids are older, I hope to do shows & fairs across the country.

JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay?

KIRSTEN:I sold a purple princess fringe bracelet on eBay for $42. I was over the moon about it!

JM: Where did come up with your name?

KIRSTEN: I get asked that often. I wish the answer was more glamorous... I got hooked up to the internet in 1995. I was pregnant with my first child, and I was in baby-mode. When AOL asked me for a screen name, and "WinniethePooh" was already taken, I went with "winipoo". Well, "winipoo" has been my user ID for all sorts of things ever since. And when eBay asked me for an ID, of course, it was "winipoo".

And when I needed to come up with a name for my business, you guessed it! winipoo. It has lost all meaning to me of the stuffed little bear. If I was walking down the street, and someone called out "winipoo!" I'd surely turn around. I identify with it through and through.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

KIRSTEN: I am a member of the Boutique Bellas. They invited me to join, and I couldn't be happier! They are wonderful designers, and the LAUGHS!!! Oh my, they are some funny women! I also am a member of Boutique Icing, a group of designers for children & adult jewelry. That group has some wonderful themed launches, and I really get inspired for them!

JM: What are your favorite materials to work with?

KIRSTEN: love love love to work with artisan made beads - both glass and clay. They are little works of art unto themselves, and I love to take them, hold them, feel them, and then turn them into something wearable.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

KIRSTEN:I would be quite pleased to learn how to make lampwork glass beads. I have taken a class in it, and my husband and I are in the process of building a studio in which I will have the ability to take that further. I'd love to sit and watch some of my favorite polymer artists work too. I have made polymer beads in the past, and so I know how crazy difficult it is to get such perfection in a little bead, and keeping the clay clean! I really want to know how they do it! Making beads is important to me, because if I was skilled in that area, then the sky is the limit! While I would never have the time to make the beads for all of my pieces, if I had a particular vision, it would be nice to create the beads to make it a reality.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides making fabulous jewelry?

KIRSTEN: I enjoy spending time with my friends. I am involved in my local mothers of twins club, and enjoy participating in their activities, particularly the book group. I am also involved with my church, and am grateful for the friendships and spiritual growth. I love listening to my children play, especially when they are playing nicely! I love listening to my oldest play the violin. And I love watching movies with my husband after the kids are asleep. Oh, and I love shopping and bidding on eBay!!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

KIRSTEN: I am HONORED to be the Designer of the Week. I visit Journal Modiste every day to see what is going on in the boutique world. I am pleased as punch to be giving this interview! Thank you! And also... a big thank you to all the children's clothing designers on eBay! Your wearable art is an inspiration for my designs, I love buying your OOAK designs for my daughter, and I love socializing with you all on the eBay Groups message boards. I truly value your friendship and support.
