JM: Chey, when did you get started sewing and creating?

CHEY: I have sewn on and off for a number of years. As a young child my mom made many of my Special Occasion clothes, and after watching her, I remember many failed attempts at making Barbie clothing. I recieved my 1st machine when I was 17, it was an antique Pacesetter, I still have it!!

After my daughter was born in 2003, I was given a new machine for Christmas that year. I started sewing little things here and there for her, and then once my son was born, I really moved ahead full force, and upgraded my machine yet again to a professional quality machine. I initially learned by reading A LOT. More recently I have taken many classes, from Sewing, to Desiging, Draping and Drafting. I make every attempt to continuously upgrade my skills. There is so much to know and learn, that you can just never know it all.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

CHEY: I am fairly new to selling my designs on eBay. I began in late May of this year. Currently I do not sell anywhere outside of eBay, though at point I do plan to have an operational website.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

CHEY: I do remember my 1st outfit. I actually ran 5 auctions for my debut week, but the 1st in that debut, was my "Going Places" set. It sold for aorund $45 and I was ecstatic. It is still one of my favourite sets!! I have never looked back!!

JM: How did come up with your name, Yummy Baby?

CHEY: I initially began selling under my*doodlebug*designs, I thought it was a unique and fun name. We call my daughter Doodlebug. After spending time in the Boutique Community, I realized that there were other sellers with similar ID's, so I wanted a change. I went with Yummy Baby, because it is much more suited to my personality, and all babies are yummy babies!!

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

CHEY: I belong to the group 7th Avenue. I have been with the group since it's formation, we began as a chatty group or girls, and just grew into the group we are now. The best part of 7th Ave, is the comradery. We all get along famously, we all have the same crazy sense of humour. I couldn't ask to be around a better group of ladies.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

CHEY:I primarily design boys clothing. I seem to have a passion for it, and it is what I do best. I can see the end product in my head, long before I ever begin, and when I complete a set, it is exactly what I had envisioned. I occasionally do design brother / sister sets and Girls sets, but my true love is in designing for the little men!!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

CHEY: Oh wow. Well, related to sewing, I would like to be more skilled (and more diligent) at sketching my designs, I think it would help save a lot of my ideas. There is so much going on up in my head, that I often forget about something before I have a chance to design it.

Non sewing related, I would love to be able to landscape. Our home is on 5 acres, with a fair amount of that as our yard. It has been that way for three years, and we still have no flowers or shrubs. We put a pond in the same year we put our grass in, but never got any further than that.

JM: What was your first job? How much did you earn?

CHEY:My first job, was working for my parents, I think they paid me slave wages, about $4.25 and hour or something crazy like that. They owned a hotel, so I did whatever they wanted me to do. Everything from cleaning rooms, to washing dishes, to scraping gum from under the tables. I don't think I ever had any embarassing moments, but scraping the gum was pretty gross.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

CHEY:Our family is an avid outdoors family. In the summer we spend a lot of time at the lake on our boat, and we also like to RV. I would say camp, but we are not the pitch a tent kind of family... In the winter we love to go snowmobiling and ice fishing. We really just love doing anything that allows us to be together. My husband works long hours sometimes, so it is a treat when we can all be together.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

CHEY:Yes, thank you Amy for the priviledge of being in Journal Modiste!! And a shout out to all my girls back home on 7th Ave!! And thanks to my DEAR husband for letting my sell his pool table and air hockey table to turn our rec room into a studio, and for allowing me to buy what I need in order to be successful.

Do you have a question that you are dying to ask Chey? Comment about something she said or designed? Post it here and she will answer it!

Hi Chey, Congratulations on the interview. I'm sure you don't remember, but you gave me very valuable advise a few months back about bringing my auctionsup to standard and taking better pictures. Thank you again for your help. I wish you continued success! Kim

Ha ha, the scraping of the gum is such a distant memory now, HOWEVER the loss of the pool table wil forever remain a traumatic experience to my POOR Husband. I was something that HAD to be done!! LOL. Thanks again, Cheers Chey
