Designer of the Week - Pickles & Co.

This week get to know Annette of Pickles & Co.. She lives in Laramie, WY with her husband and 2 girls...Cassidy (13) and Paityn (9).

See her current eBay auctions: Pickles & Co.

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

ANNETTE: I have been sewing for just about as long as I can remember, but I really didn't "fall in love" with sewing until I had my girls. I had three great teachers. My mom is probably the BEST seamstress I know. My aunt had a sewing school, and I usually spent a week or two with her in the summer. My Home Ec teacher, Mary Ann, was my mom's best friend, and she was a wonderful woman. She taught me SO much, and not just about sewing. She was killed in an accident less than a year ago, but she touched my life SO much that almost every day there's something that reminds me of her in some way as I go about my daily routine.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

ANNETTE:Gosh...I started out selling doll clothes for American Girl and My Twinn dolls. That was several years ago, but I don't remember exactly when. Later I realized that what I REALLY wanted to do was make girls clothing. At that time, I ran an in-home daycare...I did that for 11 years. Before that (before having children), I was an accountant.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

ANNETTE: They all kind of run together. :) There were several that sold for around $35-$40. I DO, however, vividly remember the first ones that were really exciting for me. One of them was the first set that Sophie modeled for me. The other one was my "I'm A Little Crabby" set. The Sophie set was the first one I felt extremely proud of. The "crabby" set was one of the first times I tried applique, and I was HOOKED!!!

JM: How did come up with your name, Pickles & Co.?

ANNETTE: Actually, I recently changed my name after taking off some time when we moved last summer. I'd been wanting to change it (it was sewbynette before) for quite awhile, but I was a little afraid to. Once I'd been away from ebay for several months, I knew it was time, if I was ever going to do it. I asked my girls and my husband for help. One of them threw out "Pickles"-something or other. I knew that would be perfect, because my grandpa has always called me "Pickles". After a lot of "Pickles" combinations, we decided on "Pickles and Co." since my family is such a big part of this. I'm "Pickles" husband and kids are the "and Co." Until then, I'd never really thought about why my grandpa calls me "Pickles"...he's just kind of a funny guy. He's 83 and still a hoot!! It turns out, there was a song called "Pickles" many years ago, and that's where he got it. When I told him my new business name, he had a big grin on his face.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

ANNETTE: I'm a VERY proud member of H2H ( I'd been admiring the group since it began, and admiring their members as individuals before that. I was their first guest, and after guesting with them twice, they invited me to become a member. I LOVE this group!!! I love that we each bring our own strengths, and we each have a different style, but bringing that all together as a group just works so well.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

ANNETTE: My favorite thing to create is applique. I feel like it's my "art". I just love to put all the little pieces together, and gradually as they're stitched, it all comes together and becomes something special. The really neat thing is, that sometimes I cut the pieces and arrange them, but before I'm done, I've switched them around, trimmed them up, maybe added something, and in the end, it's usually not exactly the way it started out to be. So it's sometimes a bit of a suprise even for me. :)

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

ANNETTE: Photography. I already love photography, but I'd love to get really good at it. I can't really explain why that's important to just does something for me.

Another thing I'd like to learn is what I call the "little kayaks". I have NO idea why!!!! We recently moved to Wyoming, just north of Colorado, and there are SO many outdoor activities. All summer long I kept seeing those "little kayaks" (which are actually called "Fun Boats") on the tops of vehicles heading for what MUST be so much fun!!! (maybe it's the bright colors that make them look like so much fun) I even went into an outdoor shop to check into renting one...until they explained to me how difficult it is to learn to use them. Apparantly it's much more difficult even than kayaking, which is funny, because I've never even been in a kayak or a canoe!!!! :) I can't talk my girls or my husband into trying it with me.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

ANNETTE: I really want to go everywhere!!! My interests vary so much. I love cities, I love the country, I love beaches, the mountains, etc. My husband and I have talked many times about how we will fill incomplete if we don't see all of the US in our lifetime. I WOULD like to go to Belize though...and Tahiti.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

ANNETTE: I've already mentioned photography. I also love to cook, read, bike ride with my family, camp, snow ski, and hang out in the mountains.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

ANNETTE: I would love to say thank you to my models and their moms...Whitney/Jacqueline and Grace/Lesli. They are such beautiful little girls, and their moms have been such a blessing to me. I'd also like to say thank you to my customers. I have met some of the most wonderful people through ebay. Thank YOU Journal Modiste for choosing to interview me. What an honor it is!!!!
