This week get to know Karen of Baffin Bags.

She lives in Houston, Texas with her three children - Rhea - the oldest, her family including her only grandson - Hunter who lives pretty close to her. Karen also has 2 teenagers still at home - Kelli and Alex.

See Karen's current eBay auctions: Baffin Bags

JM: Karen, When did you get started creating bags?

KAREN:

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

KAREN:I started making bags a little over 3 years ago. I wanted a creative outlet, had some free time in the evenings and started sewing again. I have been sewing for over 40 years, starting with beginner sewing in Home Economics class in Jr. High and then over the years I made clothes for myself and the kids. I also have been making the usual decorating items for the house before I started making bags.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on ebay?

KAREN:I started listing on ebay as soon as I started making the bags three years ago. Rhea helped me get started with ebay, everything from staging the bag, taking pictures and then setting up the auctions with a template she created and gave me. I only sell on ebay and to friends / co-workers.

JM: Do you remember the first item you sold on eBay?

KAREN: I don't have a picture of the very first bag - but the brown/pink ribbon bag was one I made very early in my ebay career. I think the first sold for about $20.00 and I was so excited.

JM: Where did come up with your name?

KAREN: I wanted something to go with BAG - I live on Baffin Lane and BAFFIN BAGS was created. Also the name - Baffinbags was available on the internet and also on ebay.

JM: What is your favorite type of bag to create? Why?

KAREN: I love to make all kinds of bags. Anywhere from the small mini size to the very large - Diaper Bag. I especially love to make patchwork bags using many different fabrics.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

KAREN: I would love to take a photography class so that I can learn how to take better photographs of my bags for my auctions. If I take the picture inside with a flash, I just can't get it to look right, so I wait until it is nice outside and take all the pictures outside. When I look at the pictures I took when I first started listing, I know I have come a long way, but I want to learn more.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

KAREN: To be honest I love to stay home. To get to my job each work day, I drive 45 - 50 miles round trip in traffic, so on the weekends I don't want to go anywhere. After I retire and the kids are on their own, I would love to travel to Australia. That is one country I have been interested in seeing.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides creating?

KAREN: I like to crochet afghans, especially on cold winter nights, when I can snuggle under the one I am working on. Also, I love reading a good novel.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

KAREN:Thank you, Amy and Journal Modiste for asking me to be Designer of the Week. Also my thanks to all my customers who have bought and bid on my auctions over that years.

Do you have a question that you are dying to ask Karen? Comment about something she said or designed? Post it here and she will answer it!
