JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

HELENA: I began sewing about 15 years ago, when I began working as a paralegal in a law firm. I couldn’t afford the kind of suits and dresses I badly wanted to wear, so I decided to follow in my Mom’s footsteps and learn to sew. She is a very talented seamstress and used to make all of our clothes when we were little, as well as her own. I basically taught myself how to sew, though, through trial and error, and always went to my Mom when I had questions. But boy, did I make my share of mistakes back then! One time, I was making myself a fitted skirt suit, and I was so proud of how nicely I had sewn in a fitted sleeve – perfectly, without a single pucker in sight – until I held up the garment and discovered it was sewn in completely backwards! Ugh!! I never made that mistake again. Then, like so many other designers, when I had my daughter, I started making clothing for her and eventually discovered the boutique world on eBay. I have been hooked ever since!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

HELENA:I started in October of 2005. Right now, I only sell on eBay, but am thinking about branching out into a few local boutiques.

JM: What did you do before eBay?

HELENA: I was a paralegal for 15 years. I now stay at home to take care of my daughter and pursue my designing career.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

HELENA: Yes, I remember my first design well! It was a “shabby chic” type mini wardrobe with a jumper dress, distressed jeans, long sleeve t-shirt and peasant blouse. It sold for $49.99 – I was thrilled!

JM: How did come up with your name, Blondie & Co?

HELENA: When I was a paralegal, I worked for a small law firm where we were all like family to each other. My nickname became “Blondie”, and it just kinda stuck. That, plus my daughter is also blonde, so I thought it was be a cute and unique name.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

HELENA: A few months ago, I joined Wisteria Lane. where I am privileged to work with extremely talented, caring, funny and supportive women.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

HELENA:I love creating retro style designs with vintage touches and fabrics. I am the happiest little camper when I come across unique vintage fabric. The only problem is, we are soon going to have to add an extension on our house just to fit my fabric! I would have to sew night and day for the next 20 years to use it all up! But my sweet hubby never complains!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

HELENA: I very badly want to learn to crochet and knit! My wonderful Aunt has just agreed to teach me, but the only problem is she lives in Connecticut and I’m in New York. I usually get to see her once a month though, so we are going to have some crash courses! I would love to be able to supplement my designs with crocheted and knit items.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

HELENA: I have always dreamed of taking a cruise down the Nile and visiting the Valley of the Kings and the Sphinx. The Ancient Egyptians have always fascinated me. Someday….!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

HELENA:I love growing my own fresh herbs and using them in cooking. My husband and I are both foodies, and we love watching the Food Network and experimenting with new recipes

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

HELENA: I would like to thank Amy and Journal Modiste for asking me for this interview. I was so happy and flattered….you’ve made my week!
