JM: MarLena, when did you get started sewing and creating?

MARLENA: I began sewing when I was about 5 years old. I grew up in the sewing business. My father owned a sewing machine and vacuum store and I just naturally, learned to sew! He would take me to conventions and have me demonstrate the machines..."Even a child can use this machine." LOL!

I taught myself garment construction when I was 15, sewed for myself and friends for many years, then when I was 25, I apprenticed with an accomplished seamstress. I learned so much more from her in the way of techniques, fitting, and finishing a garment.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

MARLENA:I then went into business for myself doing custom sewing and alterations out of my home about 10 years ago. Once my children came, I backed off a bit, but when I found the ebay boutique world a year and half ago, it was truly fate!

I absolutely love designing for little girls (and boys when I do), it is such a wonderful release for me. I feel like I finally have an avenue for which all my God-given creative juices can flow!

I primarily sell on ebay, but am also a part of the wonderful Cherry Tree Avenue group which sells off our website (www.cherrytreeavenue.com) and at home shows across the country.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

MARLENA:I do remember...LOL! My first sale was "Asian Gardens". It sold to a wonderfully faithful customer fo mine for $49.95.

JM: How did come up with your name, Chic Creations?

MARLENA:No really great mind-blowing answer for this one.....I loved the shabby chic look and decided to use the Chic in my name. Chic Creations just sort of sounded the best.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

MARLENA: I am part of the 7th Ave. group. This wonderful and talented group of designers invited me to join them last fall. I was flattered and thrilled! Still am!

I'm still just getting to know everyone better, but we're having a blast! Everyone is very friendly, laid back and so talented. I look forward to working with them all as we move forward!

I love that we can talk about anything and that we have a very close-knit group that totally ROCKS! The ladies all support each other on a personal and a business level. We cheer each other on through each auction, whether it sinks or floats! It is so encouraging to have friends that are there for you!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

MARLENA: I am a dress girl...Dresses or tops and Skirts. I just love little girls who are very feminine and love to wear dresses or skirts. When they twirl around an feel pretty in what I create...It just makes my day!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

MARLENA: Hmmmmm....I don't really feel challenged with sewing skills. My biggest challenge is photography, which is why I have been sending out most of my designs lately. I think it is very important to have good pictures so the buyers can really see the beauty of my garments. I would love to take beautiful pictures....just haven't gotten there yet.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

MARLENA:Europe. France or Italy. I haven't ever been out of the country.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

MARLENA:I am a big TV-head! LOL! The one thing my sweet, supportive husband requires of me is to spend time with him in front of the tube at night, so I do and I am hooked on several shows.

I also enjoy spending time with my children. I try to keep a balance between work and the kids. Taking time out each day to something fun or memorable with them...life is too short.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

MARLENA: Thank you so much for asking me to share with you! I love Journal Modiste and all it's resources!
