JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

LANE: I really learned the basics from my mother and a wonderful high school teacher. She had oodles of patience with someone who really had no interest in sewing! I was definitely more into sports. Boy! how things change!!!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

LANE:I started selling on eBay about 5 years ago but didn't start selling my smocked sets on ebay until about three years ago.

I really haven't attempted, nor seem to be able to find the time, to sell anywhere else, except for local private customers.

When my children were younger, I was Vice President of a corporation involved in competitive bidding and furnishing large mess hall equipment to federal, state and city governments. I loved the competitiveness of the business but while at home, I loved sewing for my two girls and two boys!

Because of my love of smocking and heirloom sewing, I opened a shop in Newport News, Virgiinia and sold it when my husband had to travel too much and I wanted to be with him. So we moved all over the country and had great experiences living in different areas of our great country. During that time I wrote several books. One on heirloom sewing and two embroidery design books.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

LANE: I think it was a jumper smocked with Raggedy Ann and Andy. I believe it sold for $60.

JM: How did come up with your name, Delaney's Garden?

LANE:I have a little granddaughter, Delaney Grace, and I love that name. Wonder if it is because she is named for me?? The 'garden' portion just seemed to fit.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

LANE: I belong to two of the most wonderful groups! Boutique Grannies The Boutique Grannies and Style360. I love both of them and there are so many talented gals in both groups. I was invited by one of the Grannies to join in the early stages of the group formation. The Grannie group is made up of a bunch of fun, sometimes crazy, grannies and we have such rapport and the group is so supportive. All of our launches are so exciting!

I think it was this past July that I was invited to join a new group that was being formed, Style360, and knew a couple of the gals in there. I knew the quality of their work and originality of their designs and knew that it was the type of group I wanted to be associated with. They are a super bunch of girls, lots of talent, great support group and there is such caring for each other.

I also belong to another small group that is quite different than what you normally think of as a 'group'. It is the Society Girls and we only do 4 or so launches a year and we concentrate on heirloom sewing techniques. It is so much fun to share techniques with these great girls. They are so much fun and I think probably all of us want to make sure these heirloom techniques are not lost.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

LANE: Wow! That is a hard one! Anything that keeps my hands busy. I love smocking, embroidery, knitting, cross stitching and Hardanger. I find it hard to just sit. My hands have to be busy. We lived in Saudi Arabia for seven years and I made one daughter 56 sweaters! One day when we were in the states, she took me to her closet and showed me those neatly folded stacks of sweaters and said, "Mom....no more sweaters, please!" The other daughter is not a sweater type person, so I sewed or cross stitched on linen for her.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

LANE: I would love to learn how to make beautiful templates and to become more adept at html. I would also love to know everything there is to know about my PSP9. I purchased the book PSP9 For Dummies but this dummy didn't understand most of it!

It is important for me because I love looking at auctions and seeing them beautifully laid out and yearn to have mine look like some of them.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

LANE:I think I am traveled out!. I have traveled to 33 countries, have taken a trip around the world, gone on a safari in Africa, taken a trip up the Fjords in Norway but didn't get to go with my husband to Communist China for three months! Not sure I would have enjoyed that anyway!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

LANE:My greatest joy is in being with my husband, children and grandchildren. We are very family oriented. I have a huge family with aunts, uncles, siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins. We had a family reunion of just my mom's side a few years ago and we had over 200 people! Strangely enough, that was only about half of them! Very prolific group, huh? At the top of my list of great joys in my life is my faith and my wonderful church. Life is so good!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

LANE:Yes, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to share some thoughts. It is quite a privilege! I would also love to thank my wonderful customers, my mailing list buddies and all the others that email me to tell me how much they like certain things I make. You can't imagine how great that feels. I am thoroughly enjoying this whole boutique world!!!
