Designer of the Week - Fooy's Fashion

This week get to know Shell of Fooy's Fashions. She lives in Bartlett, Tenessee with her husband and three children.

"I have three wonderful children. Christopher, my oldest at 14 who I had early into my 16th year. He has taught me many things about who I am and what kind of person I want to be. I single handily credit is birth with saving my life. Jacob who just turned 10 finds a way to tug on my heartstrings and attach himself snuggly to my heart. He has the only child syndrome and would just as soon trade his brother and sister off for a new video game. Last there is my daughter who will be 5. Franchescia , Foo or Fooy and we call her is my little princess. She makes me smile every time I think of her and just looking into her eyes makes me stop and think how precious life is as her long trip into this world was very trying one."

JM: Shell, when did you get started sewing and creating?

SHELL: I have been creating all of my life. Drawing was an escape for me. One simple pad of paper and a pencil would take me off into a magical world for hours. I found myself writing poetry from about 10 and love to paint in my free time. I don't get to do that often, as free time is a precious commodity around here. It wasn't until 8th grade Home Economics that I first worked a sewing machine.

After my daughter was born I found myself wanting to sew again. I have found great love in what I do and I would not trade the noise of the sewing machine for nothing-ok maybe a new sewing

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

SHELL:I have been selling my designs on eBay since 2001. I hope to one day have my website up and running. My Hubby purchased a domain for me a few years back but I still have not found the time to get it up and running. Before eBay.. I did not know there was life before eBay - lol.. I have been on eBay since 1997. The bug bit me as soon as I found out that you could sell things that you did not want anymore and make money with little effort.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

SHELL: I do remember the first outfit! It was made out of some pink chenille. I had seen a dress with a heart keyhole in back and wanted to duplicate it. I never thought that someone would really buy it. When it sold I was so excited and could not wait to do it again. I do not remember what it had sold for. Just that it had

JM: Where did come up with your name, Fooy's Fashions?

SHELL:The name was one of those things that you just seem to put together with little to no thought as you are sitting around with the kids on a Sunday afternoon. My son has called his sister Fooy since she has been born. One of those goofy nicknames that seem to stick. Put fashions on the end and Boom! Fooys_Fashions had been born. No rocket science need

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

SHELL: I belong to two awesome groups. First and foremost the Jaynes . Talk about an awesome group of talented women. Our group has always been based on friendship first design second. I could never imagine not having all of the Jaynes in my life. They all bring something different to the table. I always know if I am having one of those days they are there for me. Second I have started The A-Team along with Michele of Mudpiesandpigtails. Where the art of piecing fabric has become the first Appliqué only group on eBay. It has been a wonderful experience getting to know all the creatively talented women in the group.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

SHELL: I love the art of appliqué. I really do enjoy taking scrap fabrics and putting them together and coming up with what I consider a piece of art. The time and effort that goes into appliqué is so much more intense. I sometime will be half done with a set and be ready to throw in the towel. I also love to create outfits from scratch. I do not like to use patterns so using my imagination is key.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

SHELL:I would have to say if I could learn some new skills they would be of the educated schooling kind. I never finished high school and it has always been a great dream of mine to one day go back to school and work towards a degree. I am hoping when my daughter starts school next year we will enjoy the journey together. Her in kindergarten and me a high school diploma. I cannot express to my kids enough on how important an education is. This is the one time I can honestly say Mommy knows best -lol..

JM: Can you tell us about your first job? How much did you earn?

SHELL: Working hard was something I had to do as I had been emancipated at 16 through the state and was now in their eyes a legal adult. My first job was not all that pretty. I worked for a house cleaning service and so the cleaning the nitty gritty is what I spent my days doing. I did make good money that is why I took the job. I was on my own with a baby and without a job there would have been no roof over our heads.

JM: So what other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

SHELL: I love to spend time with my family. We all have dirt bikes and we enjoy riding as a family. My hubby just bought me a new CRF230 this year so I can finally keep up with him again. We have also recently gotten into the hunt of Geocashing. This has become a very popular pastime on weekends for us.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

SHELL: I would like to say Thank You for taking the time to read about me and the others you have learned so much about on the JM site. If it wasn't for our customers, friends and those we admire in the design field we would not be where we are today.
