Designer of the Week - Gen Marie

This week get to know Christine of Gen Marie. She lives in Long Island, NY with her husband and two children, Emma age 4 and Ava, age 2.

See her current eBay auctions: Gen Marie

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

CHRISTINE: I wish I could say I have been sewing for years, but the truth is, I have only been sewing for a little over a year now. I would say that I am pretty much self taught. I saw such incredible designs on ebay, that I had to learn to sew. I asked my mother-in-law to work through one pattern with me, and I was instantly hooked! Sewing has been my obsession since! I started working through pattern after pattern, learning as I went. I also took two basic sewing classes, and a quilting class at my local quilt shops, which were very helpful.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

CHRISTINE: I started selling my designs on ebay last August. Currently, this is the only place I sell, but I will take custom orders. I also have a website in the works.

Before ebay and children, I was a special education teacher. Once I had my first daughter, I stopped working as a teacher and stayed at home to be a mom. For two years, I enjoyed just being a mom to my two beautiful little girls. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to spend my days with them.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

CHRISTINE: The first outfit I sold on ebay was a stripwork dress and gaucho pants set. It sold for $39.99. I was so excited it sold!

JM: How did come up with your name, Gen Marie?

CHRISTINE:I knew I wanted to name my company after my girls. After playing around with their names I came up with GenMarie, which is a combination of their middle names. Gen is for Genevieve and Marie.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

CHRISTINE: I am a proud member of WisteriaLane! I saw that one of my favorite jewelry designers joined WisteriaLane. I was looking for a new group, and did a guest launch with them. They invited me to become a member, and the rest is history! I have never received such a warm welcome! These women are truley just the nicest people, and are all super talented! They are so supportive and encouraging. I am honored to say I can call these ladies my friends, not just my groupmates. We have this incredible bond. The list of positive things I could say about the gals of WisteriaLane is endless! I am blessed to be with them. Love my girls!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

CHRISTINE:I love creating so many styles. I'm always trying something new. But if I had to choose a favorite, I would say a vintage inspired set is my favorite thing to create. I love fabrics that are simple and elegant, particularly, embellished cotton voile, vintage hankies and vintage chenille. A lot of my pieces have a romantic feel to them, with a modern twist. I love designs that are simple and sweet, and don't distract from a child's beauty.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

CHRISTINE: I would love to learn to be a better photographer. I recently purchased a new camera, and am emerging myself in as much literature as I can find to improve my skills. I've always loved looking at photographs, particularly, ones that are taken in a photojournalism style. I want to be able to capture the feelings behind the photo, not just an image. And along with that, I would like to learn my photo editting program better. I love graphic design. I've come a long way, but I still have worlds to go.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

CHRISTINE:There are so many places I want to see, but among my top choices would be, Italy, France and I would love to go back to Hawaii. It was just paradise there!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

CHRISTINE: I enjoy spending time with my girls and my husband, and just taking in life with them. Time is going so fast, and they are getting so big. It's all I can do to hold onto them being young.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

CHRISTINE:I would like to thank you for featuring me! I am so honored to join the ranks of my fellow ebay designers who have been interviewed. A year ago, my company was a dream to me. I have come further in one year than I ever could have imagined. I am so grateful to my husband and my family for their constant support and encouragement. And a big thanks to my wonderful customers and groupmates! I am truly blessed.

Hi Christine! You are so talented. I was reading your interview and I'm glad to see that someone like yourself starting out, I myself was in a similar boat as you are, learning just this past year with the help of my mom and I have been hooked ever since! You are quite an inspiration. I have a question, how can I join the Wisterialane boutique group?

Chrsitine, We could no be more proud of your work as both a designer/sewer of children's cloting, and your evolving eBay designs and the way you present your masterpieces! I look back to a year ago when you first beagn, and now to the present, and it is clear to me that you've just begun an exciting new journey which knows - no limit.
