Designer of the Week - Harmony Wear

This week get to know Harmony of Harmony Wear. She lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband and 2 daughters, Chloƫ who is 6 and LaRue who is 2.

See her current eBay auctions: Harmony Wear

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

HARMONY: I did a lot of hand sewing for my dolls when I was a young child. I was also always sketching clothing designs I wanted to make while growing up, but I didn't have anyone to teach me how to actually sew them. Finally when I was 22, I took some sewing classes with a local independent womens clothing designer. It was the best! Our first lessons were about making our own patterns and how to alter store bought patterns. Since then I haven't looked back!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

HARMONY:I started selling my designs on eBay a little over a year ago, it was January 2006. I also make baby pouches and they are available at a store called Duck Soup which is in West Hollywood at The Grove. Other than that, I mostly sell my childrens clothes and baby pouches to local customers and through word of mouth.

Before ebay, I was (and still am) a stay at home mom. I'm so happy that I get to still stay home with my girls, but also get to do something on the side that is so fulfilling to me creatively!

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

HARMONY: Yes, I do remember my first outfit, I still have the pictures. It was an Asian inspired knit top with striped corduroy pants and and a dress. It sold for around $70, I forget the exact amount.

JM: How did come up with your name, Harmony Wear?

HARMONY: I tried to come up with a name for a long time. I wanted a name that I wouldn't get sick of eventually. I decided that the only name I probably wouldn't get sick of was my own name, lol. So I came up with the very creative name, HarmonyWear, lol ;)

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

HARMONY: I belong to a brand new fabulous group, TheCherryBlossoms . I LOVE my group so much! There is so much talent going on in this little group and everyone is so nice and funny. It's always great reading the 100s of emails we all get daily (did I mention we are a talkative bunch?)!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

HARMONY: I have many favorites! I love creating vintage style sets, particulary sweet '50s and mod '60s. I grew up scouring thrift shops trying to score awesome vintage clothes. It's fun being able to recreate that style, but have it be brand new and a perfect fit.

Sometimes I like to make really romantic and flowy sets, sets that make little girls feel like princesses, but not be too stiff and stuffy. I love for girls to be able to play and get dirty while wearing my designs.

Then on the other side of the spectrum, I love making edgier, punk rock sets. I'm a punk rock girl at heart and so it's fun to be able to make hip clothes for little girls.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

HARMONY: I would love to learn how to play the accordian. I've wanted to learn forever, but have never gone forward and searched out classes. But I just love the accordian, it might be because of my eastern European roots.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

HARMONY: Wow, this is hard because there are so many places in the world that I want to travel. I would love to be able to just travel the world for a few years. I think if I have to pick one place it would be the south of France, by the sea.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

HARMONY: Well, I'm a bit crazy for Disneyland, we are definitely a Disney family. One of our most favorite things to do is take off for the day (or after picking Chloƫ up from school) and go to Disneyland. We go a few times a month. I also love reading and have quite the book collection to prove it.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

HARMONY: I would like to thank you, Amy, for this interview and for making this wonderful boutique website. I also want to thank all my wonderful group mates, customers, and boutique friends for being so sweet and supportive. This venture has been a wonderful experience because of you!
