Designer of the Week - Hipchick

This week get to know Rhonda of Hipchick. She lives in the mid-west with her husband Rodel and 3 children: Raven, Raley and Rannon.

See her current eBay auctions: Hipchick

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

RHONDA: I grew up with a very creative grandmother and aunt--especially my aunt and she always had a project going (and often lived with us) so I got involved as often as allowed. My first creations were actually sketched/colored and pasted onto my paper dolls--then I moved up to designing for Barbie (grass roots start) LOL. I also took some sewing classes in school and later as an adult too.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

RHONDA: I sell mostly on ebay, though I do have a website (it's a work in progress) . I would love to get my designs in some brick and mortar stores--that is also a work in progress-LOL. I started selling full-time on ebay late 2004 after relocating due to hubby's career and having a lot of free time on my hands.

Prior to the move and the birth of my 3rd child I had managed a day spa and worked as a hair designer specializing in hair colour. While on maternity leave from the spa I started submitting travel and lifestyle features to the newspaper editor (who had been a client of mine in the salon) and enjoyed having the ability to contribute to my family's income without leaving home. The Lord opened the door for me to start writing from home for several newspapers and a regional magazine. The move broke those connections as they were all community focused publications but I was able to write for Young Parents Singapore as well as Family magazine and that was a blessing and a great outlet though not as full-time as previously, so I had alot of time on my hands for creating children's clothing as well.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

RHONDA: I do not have a pic ...I do remember it though and it was sweet--but I have most definitely grown over the years. The set was a two piece halter, ruffle pant design in a hot pink and lime green girly frog print and it sold for 39.99. I remember trying to be creative with the description and wrote it from the 'flirty froggie' featured in the set's perspective (pretty corny but I thought it was quite clever at the time!), would cringe now though.

JM: How did come up with your name, Hipchick?

RHONDA:I absolutely cannot remember!! I wish I had some GREAT story behind my name--obviously I don't, but it just fit and stuck with me; much like the boutique group I am lucky enough to be in: WisteriaLane. I had mulled over name after name and said them aloud and slept on it for days and then suddenly--Wisteria Lane came to mind and it was a keeper--it fit and there was no doubt that, that was the name to use.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

RHONDA: I am proud to work with the super talented ladies on Wisteria Lane. There is a group website: and a fab blog (much much thanks to Christine of GenmarieBoutique for maintaining that and Timi of CinnamonGirl*Studio for helping in the design and creation of the blog). Both of these ladies worked super hard to get the blog going for us and we love it!

What I love most about WisteriaLane is the fact that all of the members make it home, everyone pulls together and works as a team--like the blog for example, then we have other members that are talented in photography, in layout, etc...we all share our talents with one another. I am proud to have my WistaSista's and feel a real connection with each of the members and feel that each member brings something special (in herself) to the group. It is very much like a family atmosphere and I am blessed by each of the members.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

RHONDA: I don't really have a favorite. My goal is to try to change things up with each set and not get into the habit of doing the same style over and over (I am sometimes lazy with this though) and have to remind myself to do something different. I have been doing some peasant style tops and pants lately but I am working on something new for a BIG VIP Block Party launch WisteriaLane is having in January and am super excited to be able to share that design soon! I also just did a really sweet twirl skirt for my baby girl for her Christmas party at school and that was alot of fun to do.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

RHONDA: I would love to learn to paint or do create beaded jewelry pieces (for personal use) but I do not have the time. When I've dabbled in painting before (within my home) I realized it's not a natural talent I have--and I'd better leave it to the pro's though I enjoy doing art work with my kiddies--it is not something I would ever see myself doing in any professional realm. I'm in total awe of several WisteriaLane members who are super talented in these areas and are forever creating original artworks--they're inspiring and I am happy that I can enjoy their work--but know that isn't my niche or talent (LOL). I do read books and magazines to 'grow' my skills--I am always interested in growing, improving and challenging myself.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be? dumb as this sounds, probably Orlando and not because I've not been many times before myself but because I owe my children a trip to Disney--we'd planned to go this past summer and due to the craziness of relocating again (due to hubby's career) weren't able to fit it in--and now I am trying to figure out when we can fit it in and find a great deal on airfare and so forth--so that's on my must do's. I want to take my youngest before she's too old to enjoy the magic of Disney. My older two enjoy Universal Studios and may not get as much thrill out of Disney (I know my teen daughter won't) she's done Disney and Universal but I think the younger two will enjoy it alot.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

RHONDA: I love to read and write and enjoy that alot when I have the time. I spend alot of time doing things that have to be done like house work, chauffeuring the kiddies, etc. but I love those things too (well, maybe not the house work but I do like a clean house so it's a win-win). I am making writing more of a priority for 2008.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

RHONDA:Much thanks to Journal Modiste for featuring me, I'm truly honored. Ebay is full of talented designers and mom's gone entrepreneur, who all deserve a pat on the back for their talents and hard work and I'm thrilled to be featured on your website--and thank you for making ebay designers a focus. Thank You.

Thanks guys, but a quick correction...I think that first paragraph is about someone else, I don't live in S. California, I don't know any Mikes--LoL--and those are't the names of my children...I'm married to Rodel and have a Raven, Rannon and a Raley--LOL. :) I live in the mid-west though I am from the south.
