1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I started sewing (apart from Home Ec classes) when I was 14 - took some lessons. It was difficult to find decent clothes in Russia at that time but we had Burda magazine with patterns available, so I started making my own clothes.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

I started selling 3 years ago. Right now all my business comes through e-bay. I used to sell to on-line boutiques but I prefer e-bay. :o)

Before e-bay I was doing what I am still doing now - I am a software developer for a local school system.

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

My very first outfit was made out of chenille and vintage pillowcase. I think it sold for $25. My first "break" came after my giraffe overalls.

3. How did you decide upon your name?

My first e-bay name was "Midnight Creations", since I am sewing after kids go to bed and sometimes till well after midnight. Then I changed to hippomama1 - we are partial to hippos in my family, so I knew that "hippo" had to be a part of my name. Hippomama was already taken, so my creative mind came up with hippomama1. LOL

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

I belong to Gallery Bay, this is a pretty new group. I love how diverse we are in our styles, and how creative each and every member is. And of course they are just a great bunch of gals to "hang out" with. :o)

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

I love to appliqué on denim. I absolutely adore denim on the kids! And I love to draw and then "paint" my designs with the scraps of fabric. I have a huge bin with scraps, and it's like an artists' palette to me.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers?

Denim! Nice cotton prints(Kaffe Fassett, Michael Miller, Alexander Henry, Free Spirit has some awesome designers working for them).

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

I have an area in the basement which I converted into the sewing room. You have to pass it to get to the den, and my husband jokes that it's like walking through the mine file. I guess that answers the question about neatness. LOL I do most of the work after 9pm. Sometimes I work on weekends, but I try not to.

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

I love to take mini-trips with my family and friends. We are a very active family - no use to call our home number on weekends. I enjoy having little impromptu parties at my house. I LOVE to read! Love to travel.

9. Anything else you would like to add?

First of all I am thankful for the opportunity to be a featured designer at JM! The second but not less important - I am thankful to all my customers - it's the greatest feeling when your creations are being appreciated!
