JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

SHELLY: Interestingly enough, I’ve only been creating and sewing custom clothing for a little over a year! My mom taught me the basics – everything else I learned through research, practice, research, practice and, well, research and practice! I’ve got an entire book full of people to thank for every little bit of help I’ve received along the way! The eBay boards have been particularly invaluable.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

SHELLY: I started selling my designs on eBay in October of 2005. At this point, I don’t sell anywhere else (except to friends and family ;)). My goal is to get a website up and running this year! Before my eBay/SAHM days, I was a teacher of math & science at the junior high level and of a personal and social responsibility class for freshmen.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

SHELLY: The first outfit I ever sold on eBay was in October of 2005, I believe. It was a pair of OOAK Christmas overalls and they sold for $34.99 (not bad, for a first sale!). At that time, I was convinced I would never be able to create clothing from scratch and would ONLY embellish pre-made items. I look at the photos in amazement… it’s incredible for me to see how far I have come in such a short time

JM: How did come up with your name, Inspired Designs?

SHELLY: It came kind of easily, actually.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

SHELLY: I am the proud leader of Boutique Wish! I was brought into the group about 6 months ago after I searched and searched for what I thought would be the perfect match for me. When I started, the group was undergoing a major transition and almost immediately, I accepted some additional responsibilities. Before I knew it, I was taking the lead. Kind of crazy, huh? I’ve made some absolutely fabulous friends in Wish. And the talent there… unbelievable! It’s been such an honor and a blessing working with these ladies!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

SHELLY: A NEW design (skirt, top, dress, doesn’t matter)!! LOL! I have so much fun putting sets together for the first time, that I don’t like to repeat very often. I’ll make a set for my daughter to model for my listing, then no more than 2-3 others of the same set before I’ll move on to something new! Keeps things exciting!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

SHELLY: Oh my goodness… I don’t ever want to STOP learning new skills! I did recently learn how to make boutique style bows and I’d love to learn to crochet at some point… I think all new skills are important for allowing me to become better at what I do and to be able to diversify what I have to offer my customers!

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

SHELLY: I’ve never been to Hawaii and I’d REALLY love to travel there! Isn’t that crazy? Anywhere in the world and I choose my own country. There’s just so much for me to see still!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

SHELLY: I LOVE going to church! I’m a youth leader under my little brother (the youth pastor in training!)… I really enjoy my time with that group. I’m also going to begin volunteering at a local agency called the South Suburban Special Recreation Association next month. What they do is coordinate with 10 area Park Districts and offer similar programming to special needs children and adults. I’ve chosen to participate in a chef’s class for 2-5 year olds and I can’t wait!!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

SHELLY: Thanks so much for allowing me to share with you! It’s been an honor!
