Designer of the Week - Lemon Cadet

This week get to know Beth of Lemon Cadet. She lives in West Virginia with her husband. They're working on having kids ;)

Current Etsy listings: Lemon Cadet

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

BETH: I've been using a sewing machine since about 1985. My mom taught me. I started sewing with a needle and thread much earlier. I was always stitching something together. I remember making a little purse and having trouble with the button. I had apparently chosen the world's largest button and didn't make the hole for it big enough. Mom helped with that fix.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on Etsy?

BETH:I have been a member of Etsy since October of 2006. I didn't list anything right away though. I waited a few weeks. Lemon Cadet is in a couple of shops but I go to a lot of indie craft fairs to sell. I love the one-on-one interaction with the customers that you don't get online.

JM: You have such a unique style. What inspires you?

BETH:I'm a photographer/visual artist so my inspiration comes from a lot of photography. I like going to museums. I'm also really into plants. If I could go to a Botanical Garden every day, I'd be in heaven.

JM: How did you decide upon your name?

BETH: I made a list of all my favorite words and started putting them together until something clicked. I wanted something retro sounding, something fun and not too serious.

JM: What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

BETH:I love making the bean softies. It's so fun to start with this flat thing and then make it 3-dimensional, to give it life.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

BETH: I really need to learn web design and html. As a small business owner, having a web presence is of utmost importance. I want to be able to make my own website so that I'll have control of it.

JM:If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

BETH:I don't think you have enough space for this answer! Travelling is essential to my being. My husband and I vowed that we would take one international trip each year. I want to see Iguazu Falls in South America, and Machu Picchu. I want to spend some time in Guatemala. I'd love to go to Costa Rica. One day maybe we'll go to the small town in Poland (now Belarus) where my Grandpa was born. My husband has never been to Portland or Seattle so I think we should go there, too. Oh, and Alaska and Hawaii, Japan, Taiwan, Texas (I've never been to Texas)…

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

BETH:I'm an avid reader. I love fiction. One of my favorite books is Crackpots by Sara Pritchard. She's a genius. She has this amazing way to bring humor into an incredibly sad moment in her writing.

I also like gardening and taking care of the house. I have a magazine addiction.

Anything else you would like to add?

BETH:Yes. Thank you so much for choosing me to be one of your featured designers. Also, if anyone would like to know more about me or my work, they can visit my blog:
