JM: Robin, when did you get started sewing and creating?

ROBIN: When I was a pre-teen my mother taught me the basics of sewing. She and my father are both blue-ribbon award quilters and so sewing has never been something foreign in our home. The most important lesson I learned is to never fear color, but to embrace it and use it to lend depth and substance to a design.

When my son was a toddler, I tailored some comfortable clothing sets for him. But my designing took off when my daughter Reagan (4) was born. I discovered the boutique community and their many unique offerings when Reagan was very small. I was hooked.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

ROBIN:I started selling approximately 2.5 years ago. My designs were far simpler back then. I began selling my coat line last late summer/fall and had some of my coats, last season, in a brick and mortar boutique, but this season I don’t because of time constraints. My work has grown in the years since I began selling on eBay. In the last year I have really relaxed and enjoyed the process of creating and I use my coats as a palette with which to paint a picture using fabrics, threads and occasionally beadwork.

What did you do before eBay?

ROBIN: What I did before eBay is exactly what I am doing today. I am a Physician Assistant and work in the subspecialty of Infectious Disease. I have continued to work in my chosen career while cultivating my side business: My3luvbugz Designs

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

ROBIN: I believe it was a pair of overalls embellished down the entire front with a white chenille snowman. I think it sold for 29$ LOL. There was chenille EVERYWHERE and I was sneezing the white fluffy stuff for days LOL Suffice it to say, I do not work with chenille any longer. Unfortunately I cannot locate the pictures-they were a hoot!

JM: How did come up with your name, My3luvbugz Designs?

ROBIN:One of my sorority sisters in college used to call us all her “luv bug.” The nickname stuck and when I started having kids, they were each my “luv bug.” I have 3 kids: Kyle (12), Paige (7), and Reagan (4) and so I decided to call my business, My3luvbugz Designs.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

ROBIN: I am a proud member of ODOD ODOD. The women in this group are warm, friendly, extremely creative and original designers. After 2.5 years in the boutique community, I feel like I have found my way home. I also belong to a wonderful group of creative and inspiring women: WDAS. The talent in these two groups of women is remarkable! I love being in a boutique group for the friendship, the launches; which keep me challenged as well as the words of advice and motivation.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

ROBIN: I love, love, love coat design! My ultimate favorite motif has to be the Safari themed coat. I love piecing intricate scenes on the back of the coats-the more complicated, the better.

I gain inspiration for most of my designs in the work that I do. I am a Physician Assistant and provide preventive medical care for those people traveling abroad as well as diagnostic work-up if they return with illnesses consistent with their travel. My first safari coat was born after a couple of my patients returned from Botswana. The stories of their safari inspired me to design a coat that highlighted the rich imagery from their tales of travel.

Formerly a jewelry designer, I commonly embellish my coat sets with coordinating zipper pulls or beaded collars. Crazy-quilted jackets are my other passion. Again, the more complex the piecework, the better for me-that is what keeps me motivated and sparks my imagination.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

ROBIN:PHOTOGRAPHY! How many people have said that! LOL. There are a few ladies on eBay whose photography styles, I admire. I would be so happy to have an ounce of their talent. I plan on taking a few classes this spring. Good photos are essential to highlighting the detail work involved in our creations.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

I would love to see Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe side, travel up the Zambezi River and also safari in the Okavango Delta, Botswana during the migration. Can you tell I have put a lot of thought into it LOL. I am hoping to do this once my youngest child gets a little older and understands the experience because I want each member of my family to be left with a once in a lifetime memory.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

ROBIN: I enjoy my family! They are ‘my everything!’ Right now I am teaching my daughter Paige (7) to sew and she completed her first twin size quilt this fall-she is so talented already. Reagan is my ball of energy. At the age of 4, she keeps me busy with her Easy Bake oven and reading books. Kyle (12) has me running with his bagpipe lessons, baseball, and of course skateboarding. And thank goodness for my hubby, Chris who does all he can to help me out with my business.

Anything else you would like to add?

ROBIN:First, I want to thank you, Amy, for this interview. I love this site that you have created and maintained f or the eBay design community. At this time, I am offering spring coat-wear with a postcard motif using image transfer medium. Please stop by my ME page for details of my past and present work. Please sign-up for my Newsletter: my newsletter customers are notified of my auctions at the time of listing and on occasion, I offer shipping deals only to those who are enrolled.
