Designer of the Week - MamiGirl Boutique

This week get to know Shawnta of MamiGirl Boutique. She lives in Albuquerque, NM with her two girls, Kaitlynn is almost 3 and Micaela just turned 1.

See her current eBay auctions: mamigirlboutique

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

SHAWNTA: I started sewing when I was 19 years old. A friend of mine from church made wedding gowns and quilts. She took me to yard sales and I bought an old Singer. She taught me how to load the thread and basic quilting concepts. The first thing I ever made was a card trick quilt.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

SHAWNTA:I started shopping immediately when I found out I was having a girl...I bought many customs on ebay, but I wanted to learn to make some of the things I couldn't afford. I bought a Burda pattern and started sewing simple little dresses, tops, pants...I was hooked! I started selling on ebay when my oldest daughter was 6 months old after many people stopped me to tell me how cute her clothes were and where did I get them, etc. I sell at my Etsy shop, Although I have been approached by several websites I have not ventured into selling on them due to the commissions requested.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

SHAWNTA: I do remember the first outfit! It was such a funny little lounge set that I called Dragonflies and Stripes...and I have attached the picture. It sold for $15.00 and I was so excited!

JM: How did come up with your name, MamiGirl Boutique?

SHAWNTA:We call my oldest daughter Mami-Girl. She is half Guatemalan. It morphed from mommy's girl, we used the Spanish spelling to make it Spanglish! (Spanglish is Spanish and English mixed together.) Mami is pronounced like Mommy but that is how in Spanish it is spelled. Many Spanish families call their daughters Mami and their sons Papi. I know I rambled, sometimes it is hard to explain how you come up with things...LOL!

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

SHAWNTA: I belong to two semi-exclusive design groups. Bebe Couture (BebeC) and MonJoli. I started out guesting in launches. I was invited to join several chat boards and from there invited to join design groups. I believe my design groups are like families. I love everyone in them and the support and advice they give is just an immense help and comfort. Having them to lean on is everything. Plus, we all admire each other's work so much and it is really ex citing to get to see everyone's works in progress before anyone else. ;)

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

SHAWNTA: I LOVE to create Patchwork tops and mosaic jeans. I love quilting and the patchwork tops allow me to incorporate that style and creativity into clothing for my sweet little girls.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

SHAWNTA: I would love to learn how to make hairbows! I am a complete moron when it comes to that type of thing. That is so sad, isn't it?!? Well, even though my daughters have very little hair, I think many girls do have hair and look absolutely adorable in the hairbows and I would like to offer a complete look.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

SHAWNTA:I would LOVE to go to either Hawaii or Greece. Otherwise, I would love to be able to visit Heaven for one day and see my family members. (My dad recently passed from Parkinson's complications)

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

SHAWNTA: I enjoy being a mommy, Church, scrapbooking, road trips, (We live so close to the Grand Canyon and so many beautiful natural wonders here in NM), and I do paint on clothing...shhh, don't tell! I don't take orders for the painting. LOL!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

SHAWNTA:Thank you for this opportunity to share more about me. I have really enjoyed getting to know so many lovely people in the ebay, etsy, and indiepublic communities. I hope everyone has a prosperous and healthy New Year and I give you all a High Bids Dance!

Do you have a question that you are dying to ask Shawnta? Comment about something she said or designed? Post it here and she will answer it!
