JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

PATTY: I have been creating all my life but only started sewing recently. I have a background in Fine Arts and Photography and have ALWAYS loved fashion. So at first, I used to design clothing for my girls and my mother would sew them (she has been sewing all her life). Then in early 2006, I decided to start sewing myself. Having been around such an awesome seamstress all my life definitely helped me grasp the basics easier. I took a sewing class and the rest I figured out on my own. I've always been a quick learner and I love pushing myself to try new things. I still find myself learning new techniques every day. The Internet is my friend!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

PATTY:I started selling children's boutique on eBay in May of 2006. In addition to eBay, I sell my designs on www.confettikidzboutique.com and am speaking with a couple of other online boutiques about carrying my lines in 2007. Also, I have plans to add e-commerce to my own web site soon, so you will be able to buy directly from www.modkidboutique.com. Before eBay, I was the Creative Director at a Marketing Agency in Orlando, FL.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

PATTY:Yes, of course. It was my first week listing "boutique" on eBay and it was a 3-piece "spring" design that I called Printemps Precieux. (photo attached) I made a "big girl" version which sold for $39.00 and a "toddler" version which sold for $21.00. Even though I probably ended up losing money on them (well, on the toddler version for sure!) I was thrilled that I actually sold the first thing I ever listed. Also, I gained some wonderful repeat customers from those transactions!

JM: How did come up with your name, ModKid Boutique?

PATTY:I wanted something simple and short that would be easy to remember and represented my company well. I immediately grabbed on to the word "MOD" because it is short for "modern" and I love modern design. I played around with a few combinations of words? "ModKids" came first. Then I dropped the "s" to make it shorter and punchier. I had a few other options, but always came back to "MODKID". Once I designed the logotype, it just seemed to fit perfectly.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

PATTY:I recently left my design group to pursue a career as an independent designer. I had a wonderful experience while in my group and I will never forget it, but I felt it was time for me to embark on my own and broaden my horizons. So far I have had a very warm reception as an indie, and have been invited to guest with several wonderful groups. I am excited to test the waters, meet new people and get more exposure out there.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

PATTY:I am totally in love with European design. I adore their funky shapes, bright colors and unusual pairings of design elements. I think the "euro" look fits my personality and my kids' personalities, and ultimately I design for them. In the coming year you will be seeing a lot more euro-inspired designs from MODKID.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

PATTY: I'd love to learn how to knit/crochet. I think it would be a great pastime and even something I could take with me on long road trips. I can't very well take my sewing machine (LOL!) and this way I could still exercise my creative juices while traveling. I would love to be able to knit coordinating pieces for my euro designs, scarves, hats, sweaters.

Also, a long-term goal of mine is to be able to design my own fabric and sewing patterns. I think with my background in graphic design & fine arts it would be an easy transition for me. I already have so many ideas scribbled on notepads all around my office! This will be something I will be pursuing as soon as both of my girls are in school full-time

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

PATTY:I lived in the Netherlands for a short period during a work assignment and I had the opportunity to visit a few countries while over there. But I did not get a chance to visit Scandinavia or the Eastern Countries. I would absolutely love to travel through the Czech Republic and Austria. And you'd better believe I would stop at EVERY fabric store along the way! LOL!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

PATTY: What?!? There's life outside of my sewing room? LOL! Besides sewing, I love to travel, eat ethnic foods and of course shop. At home, I love spending time with my family and watching movies.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

PATTY:I would like to thank my husband, Jon, and my mother, Maria, for being an incredible support system through this crazy journey and for always believing in me and cheering me on. Of course, my 2 princesses have been the sole inspiration for this venture, so "Thank you, girls!" And last but not least I would like to thank Journal Modiste for this great opportunity. I am so honored and thrilled to be able to share this with everyone. Thank you!
