Designer of the Week - Painted With Grace

This week meet April Kever of Painted With Grace. She lives in Indiana with her husband and two children, Aiden who turns 5, two days after Christmas and Gracie who turned 3 in July.

JM: April, when did you get started sewing and creating?

APRIL: I don't sew, I have always been creating/drawing/painting from the time I was allowed to pick up a crayon. In fact, my first creations were probably crayon drawings on the walls and random bookshelves. As a child, I remember sketching whatever I saw like my grandpa, my dog, a house, etc... Once I was in school, I took art classes and loved them. I honestly believe that I learned from every art teacher I had through the years, especially my high school art teacher.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

APRIL: I started selling my handpainted clothing in May of this year. I'm in the process of selling at some online boutiques. Before ebay, I was just a boutique buyer and occasionally did murals for a local interior design company.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

APRIL: The first outfit I sold was a Strawberry Shortcake dress that I made for my niece's 3rd birthday. This dress got me started on my ebay business Painted_with_Grace. I think that the first dress sold for $75.

JM: How did come up with your name, Painted With Grace?

APRIL: I decided on Painted_with_Grace from using what I do and my daughter's name.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

APRIL: I belong to a wonderful group StudioE. Tasha of My_Sweet_Chic was soooo nice in getting me started. Without her, none of this would have been possible. I have known through ebay and email, some of the group members as a buyer, they invited me into the group as their clothing painter in July. All of the girls are incredibly supportive and genuinely nice. I've been blessed to have met them. Thanks girls!!!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

APRIL: My favorite thing to create would be characters. I just love being able to paint what I see. I can't wait to have a chance to do something unique and have my own mother asking for a portrait set of all four of her grandchildren. It's on my to-do list. I have recently started painting on shoes which is fun for a change.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

APRIL: I would love to learn how to sew. I would be able to add my own ruffles or to make my own tops.

JM: What was your first job? How much did you earn?

APRIL: My first "real" job besides babysitting was at GTE working at fixing some type of computer program. I think I made $8 an hour.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides painting?

APRIL:I love to read, shop, and spend time with family and friends.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

APRIL:I would like to thank the entire boutique world for being so supportive to new designers. I appreciate every email and compliment that I receive from customers, other designers, and buyers, as well. I also would like to thank Amy of Journal Modiste for having me as designer of the week. It's truly an honor.

I am a photographer looking for designers to photograph for. I am also trying to start my own kids line. I sew but I am having most things made by a seamstress. Some things are already made and I get creative with them, such as jean jackets. If you or someone you know can get me started in this I would be so thankful. Rebecca

April, My daughter loves here Strawberry Shortcake jeans. She wants to wear them everyday when I let her pick. I'm afraid to let her wear them to preschool for fear she will mess them out. You rock!!!!!
