JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

SANDI: Wow..I have created things pretty much as far back as I can remember. But my first real memory of sewing is my Grandmother teaching me how to sew a baby blanket when I was around 8. From then on, I pretty much always sewed. I made my prom dresses because I just couldn't find what I wanted in the stores. When my daughter was born, I really started sewing much more often for her.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

SANDI: I started selling on ebay when I ran into the boutique community on accident and saw what money could be made. I had just had Eliza and I was desperate to make some income from home so I wouldn't have to return to work. I also sell on Blossom Street in the Villa Fresca Neighborhood. Before ebay-I was a phlebotomist! (I drew blood for a living LOL).

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

SANDI: I started in the applique overalls business. I thoroughly expected them to go for $80 and was down right shocked when they sold for $7. I still think they were pretty cute though!

JM: How did come up with your name, Portabellopixie ?

SANDI: Ahh..I love my name! I wanted something really different. When I started was right around the time that another group on ebay was having problems with people using their name, and they eventually ended up having to change it. I didn't want to ever have that problem, so I decided to create my own word that would describe me. Portabello comes from Portobello Road. (not the mushroom as I heard a lot in the beginning) You can find anything in Portobello Road! In short, it's eclectic. Pixie is fun and girly. I thought that pretty much summed up my designs, eclectic, with a vintage feel but fun and pretty at the same time. Portabellopixie.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

SANDI: I am currently not in a group. I'm looking for the perfect permanent fit!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

SANDI: I have a beloved collection of vintage patterns that I love to draw inspiration from. I usually use a bodice from this..an arm from that, make up my own part of this.. So in short, I guess I just like to make things that aren't something you can find on the rack in a store!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

SANDI: I am dabbling in fabric design right now and love it. But I definitely have a long way to go, it is the most creative thing I have ever done.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

SANDI:Well, we recently traveled to Disneyland and loved it! But if I could go somewhere that was being paid by another person? Fiji.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

SANDI: I have played the piano for pretty much as long as I can remember, yoga, gardening, and I love going to the movies.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

SANDI:If you are thinking about plunging into the boutique world, do it! I have made so many amazing friends through this community. And it has allowed me to stay home with my kids. It can be a tough climb, but it is so fun!
