Designer of the Week - Rhembein

This week get to know Gyl (pronounced Jill - full name Gillian) of Rhembein. "Well - they said the boat ride would only take 3hrs, and I am now stuck here on this teensy island off the Pacific Coast of Canada. whistle whistle "Just sit right back and I'll tell a tale?..."

See Gyl's current eBay auctions: Rhembein and add Rhembein to your favorite eBay sellers list: Click Here:

JM: Gyl, when did you get started sewing and creating?

GYL: About 9 I think - but no one really had a chance to teach me. I learned a great deal about sewing from watching my mother sew? and from asking her to fix my mistakes. I used to sneak in and sew on my mother's machine, making things for my dolls. I would leave when I jammed the machine or broke the needle. Sorry mom! I picked up beading around the same time, but I did that all on my own. When a girl wants some jewelry, she'll do about anything to get it! LOL!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay and do you sell anywhere else besides eBay?

GYL: I have had offers to sell off eBay: through both online & brick children's boutiques, but I just don't have the time without sacrificing too much "mommy time" to fill orders like that? YET! I do plan to broaden my horizons in many different directions, but will leave my blog up to dispensing those secrets as they come to fruition. I am superstitious about talking about stuff before it has happened. Anyhoo? currently just eBay and some private clients.

I used to be in the all-exciting never-confusing world of insurance. No - I do not miss that! LOL!

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

GYL: I made an outfit LONG ago - not long after my daughter was born and hung it on a tree for the pictures. MUCH different then I do now! LOL! It had beading all around the hem of the dress-top and I used sale fabric (though cute!) from my nearest chain fabric store. A fairy theme. It sold for $45 USD and I was VERY happy. I sold a few things summer of 2005, and then really jumped into eBay April 2006, just after my son was born. I then listed an outfit made from "designer" fabric and was so proud to sell it for more then the first one, to someone who is now a good friend.

JM: Where did come up with your name?

GYL:Funny (yet boring) story. I asked my hubby to help me find the perfect one-word name for my label name. I was having trouble brainstorming. He was reading the dictionary and found "rhembein" within the definition of rhombus. I can't find a definition for rhembein, but within rhombus it says something to the effect of "to spin or whirl around". How perfect is that for girl's clothing?! I pronounce it "rem-bain" I mention this because I get that question a lot.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

GYL: Yes, I belong to the wonderful and splendidly talented Boutique (Not so Plain) Jaynes . I snuck in. I had to. They are such super cool and fun girls who truly care enough about each other to be open, honest, and work together while they have FUN, I HAD TO SNEAK IN! I couldn't stand to have them say no to me! Luckily they kept me. LOL!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

GYL: I would have to say outfits that you can layer and mix the pieces up to create different looks. I tend to layer with my kids' clothing (and my own) and love that I can remove something or add something to change it up (either because of weather or just a chance of pace).

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

GYL:Well I have an ongoing list of "must do's" as far as learning new skills and trying new things, but they all seem to be artsy or crafty. Hee hee. Not "Using the Chainsaw" or "Splitting Firewood" as where I live requires of me. I did pick up "Feeding the Sheep" though. Hee hee. So what I would like to add to my list of skills would be textile design. That and I would love to get back to doing more of the basics like painting and sculpting.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

GYL: Well first to where my dad is currently working and living. Timor-Leste. I never feel like I see him enough. Then the places I have always wanted to go would be? oh? everywhere!! I hope to be a global citizen one day and travel it all. London first.

JM: So what other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

GYL: Way too many things that I don't enough time for, and anything friends and family related. I have been spending a lot more time since we moved into this place "off the grid" doing things don't require power (like photography and hand crafts) and sitting quietly sipping coffee.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

GYL:Also a HUGE thanks to those who have bid and/or bought my items as well as the Jaynes and other friends I have been making along the way. You are all such a great bunch of gals in this community.
