JM: Emily, when did you get started sewing and creating?

EMILY: When I was a little my mom was always sewing dresses and doll clothes for me and my sister. I started sewing little pillows and silly stuff like that. When I was a teenager, my concerns were playing guitars and drawing, but I started sewing again when I found out I was going to have a baby! It started out as little blankets of course, then little dresses and now here I am! I am pretty much self taught, but my mom has helped alot!!!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

EMILY:I just started selling on Ebay in October '05. I only really discovered this little Boutique Community less than a year ago and it just screamed opportunity to me. I don't sell anywhere else.

JM: What did you do before eBay?

EMILY: Before ebay I worked in a photo-lab and I was just starting a career in the insurance industry before I had Taya. Being that I am a single mom, I really thought I would have to go back to work, but you can imagine my relief when I found this awesome opportunity! I can have my own schedule/hours, stay with my darling girl, and do something that I truly have a passion for!

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

EMILY: Yes! It wasn't that long ago at all. It was a peasant top made with pink and brown Amy butler fabric, corduroy pants with frayed appliques and a frayed sash to wrap around! It's still my favorite and Tay wears it all the time! It sold for $55, much more than I expected!

JM: How did come up with your name, Sugar Sweet Boutique?

EMILY:I called Taya 'sugar' when she was a baby, so I definitely wanted that in there. All the obvious ones were taken, 'sugar n spice', 'sugar baby'. I'm REALLY bad at making final decisions, so pretty much my friend threw 'Sugar Sweet Boutique' out there and said "TAKE IT!!!". I couldn't think of anything else and it seemed to fit, so that was that! Ha ha not a very interesting or cute little story :)

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

EMILY: No, I'm not in a group.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

EMILY: Ohh, that's a hard one. I'm not sure my favorite, but definitely things that your not going to find in the store. It's gotta make people say "Oh my goodness! WHERE did you get that!?" I like hand embroidered details and layers. Sets that can be worn in more than one way, and that will grow with your little one. Not just wear it one time and they've out-grown it already. I don't like adding allot of ruffles and floofies(whatever floofies are!) but I like to keep it undeniably girlie!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

EMILY: Photography for SURE! I have always always wanted to improve in that department! I absolutely LOVE taking pictures. It's so important because you're never ever going to get those precious moments back so you may as well invest in making them look as good as possible! I probably have 1000 bad pictures for every really good one. I really wish I could learn to crochet, but I don't have the patience at all! I'm going to take a stab at making jewelry. Not sure if i'll have time to sell it, but Tay loves sparkly jewelry and it's so cute on little girls!

I would also like to learn how to start a set....and then finish it! I always get ideas a heap load at a time, so I have like 5 different things going at once and none of them are finished! I get impatient and move onto something else too quickly.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

I REALLY love where I live and I haven't felt any big need to travel. There are allot of cute little islands off of the bigger Island that I live on and I'm quite happy to do a little trip to those in the summer if I really feel the need to 'get away'. Some of them have beaches with white sand and crystal clear water, so it
really does feel like a tropical get away! And Whistler is not that far away for the winter time. For me a short drive and a day at the beach is much more enjoyable than a huge flight and all the stresses of a vacation!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

EMILY: I am looking forward to doing new things as a mom this year. Tay has had her share of health problems so we have been fairly limited in the past year and a half. I can't wait to take her to all the parks that I loved so much when I was little, and the petting zoo! And I like to sing... yes I'm that weirdo in the car next to you singing her heart out thinking no one is looking!!! I'm no good but it's always nice when Taya joins in!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

EMILY:Well first of all thank-you Amy for giving me this wonderful opportunity!!! I want to thank everyone for a warm welcome to this little community and for their kind words of wisdom and honesty! And obviously to my family and friends who have been so supportive of my new little business venture a big Thank-You!
