JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?
PAULA:
I started sewing when I was a child. I am guessing around 7 or 8. I remember making clothes for my Barbie doll.
My mother was a Home Economic Teacher, she taught me. My Mother used to make quite a bit of the clothing
my sister and I wore.
JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?
PAULA:I started selling on ebay in early 2005. It was not until March that I actually had my first sale. I also sell at a local boutique gift shop. Before I started selling on eBay I had no paying job, I was and still am a stay at home mom.
JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?
PAULA: I first sold an outfit on eBay in March of 2005. It was a denim set, capris, a halter and a kerchief that had appliqued ladybugs on it. I think it sold for around $30.00. I rememeber being so excited. Of course, it was lost during shipping, so I had to remake it. The lady who bought it was wonderful and understanding. I do not have a picture, I think I would be terribly embarrassed to show it. I did not have a grasp of Photoshop at the time.
JM: How did come up with your name, Little Stitches Childrens Clothing?
PAULA:
My eBay id is actually my registered business name. I was trying to come up with
something catchy, when my husband suggested Little Stitches.
JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?
PAULA: I belong to the group The Boutique Rascals. I was invited to join it last spring. I love the girls in the group, everyone has a great sense of humor and they all are very supportive. We have a few listing minimums that help keep me organized.
JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?
PAULA: I really like creating a new outfit, the thrill of seeing whether the completed garment will look like what I have imagined is wonderful. I generally let my fabric inspire me. I have a huge sewing room that is overflowing with fabric. I will pull out a few fabrics and let my imagination go wild.
JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?
PAULA:
I am working hard on improving my photography skills. I have always enjoyed photography and eBay has
allowed me to expand on what I knew and go from there. I am now working on mastering high key set up so
that I can take better indoor picture during the winter time (I prefer an outdoor setting, but Nova scotia
winters prevent me from doing that year round). I purchased the High key set up book from Carrie
(eBay id: emersonsmom) and I would highly reccomend it to anyone.
As far as sewing skills go, I would like to learn how to smock. I honestly was never a big fan of smocking until I saw some of the masterpieces that have been made here on eBay. The smocking has been added to garments in such unusual and unique ways. I definately see it as an art form now.
I have just learned how to crochet, I can make a pretty cute hat at the moment, and I have a sweater that I have been working on for a month (on for my daughter). I would like to be able to design my own pattern for some sweaters, perhaps sometime in the future I will be able to.
JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
PAULA:One place I really want to go and see is Scotland. The majority of my ancestors originated from there. My husband would love to go to Ireland, so perhaps in a few years we will be able to make the big trip.
JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?
PAULA:I love to read. My house is overflowing with books. My children have caught the reading bug also and are continuously reading too. I also love photography
