1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I started sewing at age 12 or 13 after taking a Home Economics course through school. We didn’t have a lot of money for new school clothes so I used all my babysitting money for fabric and sewed them myself. I basically am a self taught sewer and knitter and have been doing both for over 35 years.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

I started selling on Ebay about 18 months ago. I primarily sell all of my designs on Ebay, but do sew customs for friends and family for special occasions. Soon, I will be selling through my own personal website as well, which should be live within a couple of weeks.

Before Ebay, I was a Neonatal Intensive Care nurse, and later worked for an online women’s ezine.

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

Mmmm, I believe the first outfit I sold on Ebay was a pair of embellished overalls and included a matching top and hat. I believe it sold for around $50.

3. How did you decide upon your name .

I lived in Italy for 8 years and every summer we would drive to Tuscany and Umbria and I would admire the sunflower fields. I have loved sunflowers ever since, and buy fresh sunflowers weekly for my house. I wanted to design children’s clothes that were fun and funky, but that also had a bit of sass. From this, my name sunflowers_with_sass was born.

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

I am presently not in any Ebay design groups but would be interested in joining one I felt was a good fit. I do enjoy belonging to Ebay’s Boutique Designers and Buyers message board and find I get a lot of support from the ladies there.

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

I do not focus on any one style or type of clothing design. I enjoy appliqué whether it is on overalls, or t-shirts and jeans, but also enjoy detailed special occasion designs in gorgeous fabrics. I also knit and do a lot of needle arts and enjoy incorporating these arts in my designs as well. I think most of my designs are first inspired by fabric choice rather than choosing fabric to fit a design.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers? Why?

I use only top quality quilting cottons, and enjoy working with textured fabrics such as wools and corduroys. Collecting fabric is one of my addictions so I think I have some from almost every designer out there!

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

I changed a basement office into my sewing room here in Toronto and we are building a new house in Florida with a high tech new sewing room there I can’t wait to use. Unfortunately, I am a messy sewer and there are fabric scraps and threads everywhere when I am working. After completion of each project though I completely clean and organize my sewing room.

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

I have an Italian Food website (Italian Food Forever) I keep up, I enjoy cooking and do spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I also knit and do many other needle arts, garden, travel, am an avid reader, and of course always enjoy spending time with my family.

9.Anything else you would like to add?

I appreciate you asking me to be interviewed and have thoroughly enjoyed the Ebay experience although it can be frustrating at times. I also want to thank my many Ebay friends who have helped me along the way!
