JM: Kim, when did you get started sewing and creating?

KIM: I started sewing in grade school with my best friend's grandmother. My best friend went to her grandma's house to sew and I would tag along. My friend hated it but I loved it and continued going over long after she stopped. Grama taught me to modify patterns, be frugal when cutting out, and of course how to ignore the instructions in the pattern packet unless you were hopelessly stuck, lol!

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

KIM:I've been selling on ebay just over a year. I'm also at Blossom Street and am having a website built as we I sell my bunnies, bears, and horses by word of mouth here locally. They get shipped as gifts all over the world, heck my critters are more seasoned travelers than I am, lol!

Before ebay I was a life guard/swim teacher, gift shop owner, and organic subscription farmer (still do that).

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

KIM: My first outfit I sold on ebay was a little butterfly outfit that had a dress, shirt, and matching socks. It was purple...I don't even like purple or butterflies that much, what was I thinking??? I don't know how much it sold for but I'm sure it wasn't much. I was just thrilled that my first ebay auction had sold!

JM: How did come up with your name, Sweet Grace Boutique?

KIM:Picking a name for my business was easy. Grace is my sweet baby girl so 'sweet-baby-grace' just seemed logical!

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

KIM: I belong to ODOD. Being in a group as supportive as ODOD is such a pleasure. Not only do we support each other in business there is a personal connection that is so important. The ladies in this group are just as sweet as can be and the combined talent in this group constantly amazes me! I love to be able to come to a group of like minded women for design advice, pointers on ebay, parenting tips, but most of all for fun and friendship!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

KIM:My favorite thing to create is whatever I'm working on at the time. I have a very short attention span and don't make a lot of the same things over and over. I do like to make anything with bright colors and a dash of black...I guess that is my favorite. I so admire those sweet, girly, ruffly things that others make, but for some reason no matter how determined I am to make something sweet it always turns out a shade funky, lol! I should have named my business 'funky-baby-grace' it probably would have been more appropriate! I made Grace's Easter dress this year out of fuchsia silk with apple green trim. When I showed my husband he just grinned and said "you just can't do 'normal' pink can you?"

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

KIM: If I could learn a new sewing skill it would be smocking. Ohhhh I just love those beautiful smocked blouses I see on ebay, simply stunning! In the 'real' world I would like to learn to play the bagpipes. I took lessons years ago and loved it but my teacher moved back to Scotland. I'm sure my family is just heart broken they don't have to hear me practice anymore, lol!

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

KIM:If I could travel anywhere in the world it would be back to Hawaii. I have no desire to be a world traveler...just give me a beach and a palm tree and I'm a very happy girl! We are planning on moving there when our youngest son is done with high school in 3.5 years...Aloha!!!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

KIM: Besides sewing I garden. I have an organic garden which I sell produce out of. I also raise chickens and sell their eggs. I love to can and preserve all the things I grow in the garden and in my orchard...yes I'm a granola at heart, lol! We also ski and surf as a family. Ok the boys surf and Grace and I watch from the warm sandy don't have to worry about sharks on the beach, lol! My husband and I remodel old houses together, our favorite tv show is 'This Old House'!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

KIM: When I started on ebay I had no idea that I would meet so many wonderful people and be so very inspired by them. I am challenged daily to learn new skills and expand my designs. The talent here is astounding. What is so amazing is that these talented ladies are always so willing to help and give advice. I can't even begin to tell you how much I've learned over the past year from all of them. Thank you so much!
