Designer of the Week - Sweet Tea Boutique

This week get to know Nicole of Sweet Tea Boutique. She lives in Indiana with her husband and four children, ages almost two, four, six, and eight.

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

NICOLE: I've been sewing since grade school, compliments of my mom. She made all of my dresses and most of her own, and knew I would one day benefit from sewing lessons. I grumbled the entire time, but she was right...just look at me now!

I started creating my own designs in high school, making bread-bag backpacks and funky tees. It's funny, but it didn't occur to me to create my own clothing patterns until many years later, after my daughter arrived.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

NICOLE:I began selling my designs on eBay last fall. Next month marks my one year anniversary here! I do fill custom orders for local customers, but I try to limit my overall workload in order to maintain a happy balance between designer/seamstress and mom/wife.

Before eBay, I taught elementary school for a couple of years, then became a SAHM. I hate to admit it, but it was FAR easier to engage the attention and cooperation of two dozen first graders than that of my own four children! :)

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

NICOLE: My first outfit was a simple ruffle jeans and tee set with a fabric floral pin. I think it sold for about $45... and boy, was I estatic! :)

JM: How did come up with your name, Sweet Tea Boutique?

NICOLE:I liked the play on words with "Sweet Tea." At the time I thought I was being clever, LOL.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

NICOLE: I belong to H2H (Head over Heels) , which formed in the spring of this year. For reasons I will never truly comprehend, these talented designers asked me to be a part of the new group!!

What do I like most? Well, two things really: first, this is a laugh-your-pants-off kind of group...I love these gals...and second, the talent level of my groupmates is just phenomenal. I often say that I want to be them when I grow up. LOL!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

NICOLE: Hmmm...that's a tough one. My favorite thing is usually the thing I'm making right now.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

NICOLE: I would LOVE to learn how to smock like some of these incredibly gifted gals here on eBay. Smocking showcases careful attention to detail and the classic elegance that I'm so in love with!

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

NICOLE:Oh goodness, this list is looonnnng. But at the top would be Prague, the South Pacific islands, Kenya.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

NICOLE:Sleeping. I also enjoy a good novel, writing, baking, all sorts of art, crafting, and soccer, but mostly sleeping. ;)

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

NICOLE:Thanks so much for the feature; I'm thrilled to pieces to be here. :)
