Designer of the Week - Cherry Tango

This week get to know Catalina of Cherry Tango. She lives in Dallas, TX with her husband and two wonderfully beautiful children. Gabriela (7) and Michael (5).

See her current eBay auctions: Cherry Tango

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

CATALINA: I started sewing many, many years ago. As a little girl with a toy sewing machine... I have loved fashion and sewing ever since. I learned some basics from my mother (who would sew for me) and from my grandmother. I also learned heirloom embroidery at school. After graduating from highschool I studied fashion design and learned both pattern making and sewing.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

CATALINA:I started selling on eBay on November 2004, when I discovered the "Boutique World". At this time I am only selling on eBay but plan on expanding as my schedule allows. Before eBay (and before kids) I was a model.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

CATALINA:Oh, yes. It was a little farm dress. My pictures were horrible and so was my template (I used eBay's listing designer) I think it sold for $59.

JM: How did come up with your name, Cherry Tango ?

CATALINA:I was looking for a new name (Stitch_it_Baby was my monogramming name) that would reflect more of me. I felt I needed to have a bit of my Latin culture in there. My friend Jenn, of Peppermints*and*Petticoats suggested Cherry*Tango and I loved it. Cherry Red is one of my favorite colors and then there's the Tango which I love, such a beautiful dance, so full of passion!

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

CATALINA: I belong to Charm Street (Charmst). I've been in it since the group started along with other designers from a previous group. It really is a wonderful place to be. It's like we are family. The girls are very supportive and encouraging. Love it!

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

CATALINA:You know, I really don't have a favorite. It's whatever pops in my mind when I pick up the fabric. But what ever it is it has to be girly.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

CATALINA: I am learning to crochet. My mom can knit and crochet beautifully and I admire her work. I like crocheting and knitting cause I can bring it anywhere unlike my sewing machine.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

CATALINA:We usually go home (Chile) when we travel but If we had the time and money to do both I'd love to go to Japan. I love to learn about different cultures.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

CATALINA: I love to rollerblade and just hang out with my family.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

CATALINA:A big huge THANK YOU for featuring me! A big thank you to my buyers and to my group, Charmst, for all their support. And last but not least a big thank you to my husband, Jeff, who has to put up with my fabric shopping habit for the rest of his life :)

Do you have a question that you are dying to ask Catalina? Comment about something she said or designed? Post it here and she will answer it!
