JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

MAHALA: I have been sewing since I was 4 or 5 years old. My Grandmother made wedding gowns, and I loved to watch her, whether it was drafting a pattern, cutting through copious lengths of bridal satin, or gathering ruffles. I guess that I learnt by watching her, and experimenting on my poor dolls! When I was a teenager, I'd make lots of my own clothes, or remodel thrift shop finds. I still make some of my own clothes, mostly when I have found that special piece of fabric which I MUST use on myself.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

MAHALA:I listed my first creations on eBay in September 2005. I am also proud to be a seller on Blossom St since July 2006. I have sold to local boutiques, however I get more pleasure from making unique, one off garments, rather than making repeats.

JM: What did you do before eBay?

MAHALA:For me, selling on eBay is not a job, but a hobby which has gone a little wild. Before having children I was the Engineering Manager for an Australian company that manufactures automotive accesories. Since then, I have helped DH with his business, begun a Masters in Commerce (oh...which I MUST finish some day!), started sewing again, and I try also to be a good SAHM.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

MAHALA: The first item I sold on eBay was a crossover top and pants set in Michael Miller Kitty Kids...it sold for $50, and the buyer also bought a second set at the same time...needless to say, I was very excited...and instantly hooked as an eBay seller!

JM: How did come up with your name, Trixie Taylor?

MAHALA:"Trixie Taylor" is my English Great-Grandmother's name. I chose it simply because it was such a sweet name, and sounded fun and playful like the clothes I like to design and make

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

MAHALA: I was recently invited to join 7AVE . I love being in the company of other creative and talented ladies who have a funny bone, and also a family life on the other side of the computer screen.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

MAHALA: Practical and fun children's wear. That sounds very general, but I like children's clothes to be designed with the playground in mind, but also fun and sweet enough to be dressy too. I like my passion for combining colourful, patterned and textured fabrics to shine through in all of my creations, and I usually cannot help adding extra embellishment of some sort to every thing I make!

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

MAHALA: My Mum is a very good knitter. I do know how to knit, but I'd like to be able to do it faster so that I could complete a garment in a reasonable timeframe. I'd also like to learn to crochet like my Grandmother. I think it is important to preserve these crafts for our own children to learn, as they are sadly disappearing. I also want to learn these crafts as I think that knitted and crocheted garments compliment the clothes that I already make from fabrics. I'd also like to learn how to take good photos!!

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

MAHALA:I have always wanted to visit Egypt...Simply to see some REALLY old stuff!!

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

MAHALA:Playing with my children and DH. I like to swim, and I do Ballet for fitness. I love to cook yummy things at home for my family...and ME! My husband and I like to collect period furniture for our dear old house ...on which one day we will do a well deserved restoration!

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

MAHALA:To buyers of boutique clothes...Please don't save those gorgeous outfits up for a special occasion!! Everyday is special, and before long your little one will have outgrown that sweet outfit! Dress them as often as you can in the beautiful original creations that you buy for them!

..and Thank You JM for asking me to be Designer of the Week...it was an honour!
