Designer of the Week - Willow Tree Boutique

This week get to know Brooke of Willow Tree Boutique. She a precious 2 year old daughter named Jaiden.

See her current eBay auctions: Willow Tree Boutique

JM: When did you get started sewing and creating?

BROOKE: I grew up with creativity surrounding me. My mother and grandmother both have amazing talents when it comes to sewing. I started by making clothing for my dolls out of tissue and tape! My interest in creating clothing grew and I helped produce my first fashion show in high school.

My love for design never left and I decided to study fashion design and merchandising at The Fashion Institute of Technology. I found a passion for creating in one of the most wonderful cities in the world when I was in NYC and spent several years engrossed in the fashion scene there. I enjoy useing different styles and techniques in my designs.

JM: When did you start selling your designs on eBay?

BROOKE: Before ebay I worked for Levi Strauss and Rebecca Dannenberg Designs. My daughter was born with a condition called craniosynanstosis so I decided to dedicate my time to her and not return to the working world. Once Jaiden turned one and her surgery and recovery were over I started to feel an itch to start creating again. I began by designing clothing for her and when I was exploring ebay I found the wonderful world of boutique designers. I decided that I would start learning about the process and began selling on ebay just over a year ago. Designing for children is the most fulfilling job I have ever had.I am currently working with several boutiques to expand the Willow Tree Clothing Line.

JM: Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay?

BROOKE:"Sweet and Yummy" a pair of appliqué overalls that sold for $69.99. I was thrilled!

JM: How did come up with your name, Willow Tree Boutique ?

BROOKE: I chose the name Willow Tree Boutique as a nod to my upbringing. My parents had a beautiful willow tree in their back yard when I was growing up and it brings warm memories to my heart.

JM: Do you belong to any boutique group?

BROOKE: I am currently groupless but have been very fortunate to make wonderful friends and acquaintances through ebays boutique community.

JM: Do you have a favorite item to create?

BROOKE:I do not have a favorite thing that I like to design but I love designing for little girls. My daughter is my inspiration and I am always seeing something that I know I must design for her. When designing for children I feel that you have to be practical about comfort and durability but you are also in a wonderful design realm that allows you to play with color and texture that is not allowed in other areas of fashion. Children are inspiring and I believe that you should design towards that.

JM: If you could learn some new skills, what would they be?

BROOKE: Through ebay I have acquired a new knowledge of HTML and it is an area that I want to continue to pursue. To me it is like oil on canvas but in a new high tech medium.

JM: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

BROOKE:I have always wanted to travel to Switzerland. It is a majestic country and I love the sound of sipping cocoa while sitting in a chalet on the mountain side.

JM: What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

BROOKE: I enjoy painting and reading but most of all I love spending time with my family. I have found a pure joy in the sound of my daughters laugh and don't want to miss a moment of her as she is already growing so quickly.

JM: Anything else you would like to add?

BROOKE: would like to extend my gratitude to the owners and moderators of Journal Modiste for asking me to be interviewed for their site. It is a great honor. I would also like to thank my family for their tremendous support and most importantly my husband and best friend Greg who has always and has given me unyielding support in bringing my dream into a reality with Willow Tree Boutique.
