1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I think I must have been about 6 years old when I found myself surrounded by quilters and nylon doll dressmakers. I was told to quit bouncing, sit still and pay attention and I might learn something that would carry me through the rest of my life, blah blah blah, or so I thought. In hindsight, I probably wouldn’t have had to re-teach myself so many techniques, if I had I done so. Many thanks to my late Great Grandma Lois and my Grandma Betty, who still gives me advice of the dos and don’ts.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

I am fairly new to the eBay community. I used to make and sell high quality blankets, throws and crib sets, but after my house slowly began to fill up with 20 Gallon buckets of fabric, I realized, along with my husband, that I needed a hobby that didn’t take up quite so much space. So, having just had a baby in March, I went with children’s clothing as it allowed me to express my creative side albeit on a smaller, less space consuming, scale. I have a website, http://www.cocobellacouture.com/ but if truth be told, I, to this point, have not really had too many sales from it, only because I am too busy for the upkeep between my boutiques and eBay. I am currently working with 5 boutiques and have the exciting prospect of being able to sell my line at a major boutique on Rodeo Drive.

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

Yes, the first outfit I sold was this summer and it was a fun pair of totally festooned overalls. By the way, many thanks to my sniper bidder, who took it for $137.50! It was very exciting to see an Internet based return after all my efforts.

3. How did you decide upon your name?

I made a list of a zillion names I liked, then got it down to a million, then asked a billion friends and finally closed my eyes and pinned the tail on the donkey…

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

I am part of a small group, Boutique Candees, with a good friend who lives close by, so it makes it easy to share the excitement of new designs and get feedback and overall support. I love the fact that we have similar tastes but often times our designs are so different that it lends itself well to being part of a really great group.

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

I have this totally fun and funky Keri Bradshaw (HBO’s Sex In The City”) “Vintage European Kimono Wrap” that I do. I love to make them because apart from being exotic and multi-cultural, every one I make is so drastically different.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers?

Hands down, I love Georgettes! I love the texture, the colors, the weightlessness, everything. Although many people consider them old fashioned, I like creating clothes from Georgettes because it’s something you are not used to seeing on children and it looks awesome!

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

My friend once asked me if she “needed to bring the fabric plow” before she came over. I think that pretty much sums it up. My husband must be horrified!

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

Shopping compulsively!

Anything else you would like to add?

Why does life ever have to be mundane? I can remember getting a full night’s sleep and waking up to go to a job that I hated, only to be exhausted, underappreciated and certainly underpaid. Now I wake up three hours after I have gone to bed, totally exhausted, overworked, and cranky but hey, I at least I have something to show for it…a totally CoCo*Juicy little girl who gets to share her wardrobe with the world! Cheers and thanks for reading…
