1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I goofed around with sewing when I was a small child spending the summer at my grandmothers. She lived on acres of farmland and there was NOTHING else to do! It was better than visiting the cows. I took sewing in Home Economics in grade school, managed to make a skirt that didn't fall apart, even wore it for the holiday chorus show at school.

I didn't get a real passion for sewing until I found EBAY. I saw the creations up for auction that were breathtaking and had the price tag to match! Being a singe income family for 4 kids and a dog, I couldn't purchase a $300 dress for my daughter. My Mother-in-law had an old machine from the late 60's just sitting in her garage and, after hanging on to it for about a year, I sat down at my kitchen table with it and didn't leave for weeks. After hours and hours with the seam ripper, I got the hang of it! Being self-taught gives me a lot of pride.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

I've sold a few things here and there, the first one being in December 2003. I didn't really start selling until a few months ago. Currently, Ebay is the only place I have my creations for sell.

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

The first outfit I can recall selling was a hot pink corduroy, renaissance style two piece dress with ribbon lacing up the back and scalloped edging around the skirt. I included two types of hats with the set. I can't recall what it sold for.

3. How did you decide upon your name?

Matilda Grace is a nickname for my sweet daughter Bethany (she is my current model). We started calling her Matilda when she was 4, after watching her trip over her own feel a few times, we added Grace, she's been Matilda Grace ever since. I always knew that if I started my own creations that Matilda Grace would be the name of my designs, I just love the name almost as much as I love Bethany.

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

I belong to "theDabs". I was invited to several groups, including "theDabs" but I choose this one because I thought the outfits/designs the group was using was professional, creative and my type of designs. I really like the girls that belong to the group, very friendly and goal minded.

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

Renaissance gowns! I love the look of tapestry, brocades, and velvets all used together! There is nothing sweeter than a little one dress to the max in gowns, capes and hats with ribbons in their hair. I absolutely adore the Italian Renaissance era. I have made several dresses for my family and myself and have worn them to the festivals that come to town. Such fun!

I also LOVE creating one-of-a-kind creations.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers?

I love just about everything EXCEPT bridal satin! Silly thing unravels right in front of my eyes. I'm fond of chenille, vintage lace and trims, suede and black velvet. Everything looks good with black velvet!

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

I start sewing in the kitchen and end up in front of the TV in the living room with a trail in between. It is not unusual for my children to be tangled up in thread or my husband to locate lost needles with his feet! There are 6 of us in my home and I don't have a room for sewing yet, the only room I haven't tracked fabric, needles and thread in is the bathroom.

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

Besides sleeping? getting out of the house!!! My house is usually very chaotic, I like to wander around stores and just let my mind wander, it's nice to have a complete thought once in awhile.

Anything else you would like to add?

I put my heart in every creation I make. If the seams are not perfect or the plaids do not line up, I don't sell it. I am very particular with what I feel is quality. I want my customer to be pleased with my creation, it is a reflection of who I am.
