1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I showed interest in sewing when I was younger, so my mom bought me a sewing machine when I was about 12, I think. I don't really remember anyone teaching me to sew…I think I just became real familiar with pouring over tons of sewing pattern directions and books, fumbling with it and learning as I went. I continued to sew throughout highschool and went on to study fashion design at Louisiana State University where I got the chance to learn the principles of patternmaking, draping and fashion illustration. While it was hard work, I really loved having the opportunity to study and learn about design.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

A very dear friend of mine introduced me to ebay about a year and a half ago. She thought ebay would be a great place for me to sell some of my designs while still selling to my local customers. I have a website (www.januaryhartdesigns.com ) that, for right now, serves as a way for people to contact me and also includes some examples of past work. My plan is to update it one day soon to include an option to purchase some of my designs…but for now it's simply a way for people to get a "feel" for what I design and a way to get in touch with me.

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

Yes, I do! It was an Autumn Toile pantset with a sassy little newsboy cap! LOL I think it went for about $60. ahhhh….strolling down memory lane….LOL

3. How did you decide upon your name?

My parents both loved an old movie with a girl named January in it…and since the day I was born fell in the month of January, my dad thought it was fitting to name me just that. My maiden name was Hart. Growing up, lots of friends thought my name had a somewhat unique quality about it, so I just decided that's what I would call my designs.

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

Yes, I belong to the Queen Bees here on ebay. Lucky for me, they approached about joining early on…I think during that week I made my "Autumn Toile" debut! LOL They're a great bunch of girls who really bend over backwards to help each other out…whether it's a little trip to the fabric store to pick up something for one of the girls who's in "custom" dire straits LOL, or just being an "ear" during the hard times of family illnesses and such...they're a great group to be a part of!

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

Hmmm…guess if I had to pinpoint one thing down, it would have to be sophisticated and polished pantsets for little girls with elements of vintage mixed in. Small details in a garment are my biggest passion! The perfectionist in me loves the details!..well that, and great packaging!! LOL

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers?

I love so many of them, honestly…..just really depends on the season, what mood I'm in and who the design is for. I guess the biggest thing I respond to when shopping for fabrics is just great textures and overall fabric quality.

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

I'm mainly a night owl when it comes to sewing, but I sew pretty much all the time…I'm just most productive in the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much a neat freak….I'm working on recovering from that one, but so far, no success! J Occasionally, if I'm really, really into a new project I will "let loose" and let a few scraps hit the carpet!....but rarely. Is there a recovery group for this one in yahoo somewhere??!!

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

Hmmm….besides sewing…guess that leaves about 6 free waking hours in the week! LOL When I'm not sewing, I enjoy spending time with my husband and friends, my little nieces and nephews, and just getting out for the day on my own to do some window shopping around town…very therapeutic for me.

Anything else you would like to add?

I'd just like to say how wonderful it is to get the opportunity to do what I love for a living. Not many people in this world get to wake up and be excited every morning about what they do for a living…while some days are less fun than others, nothing beats pursuing your dream…whatever it might be. I consider myself truly blessed to be doing what I'm doing. Thanks to all the wonderful ladies who've given me an opportunity to do business with them over the past year and a half and for all the wonderfully warm emails you've sent. I'm truly appreciative.
