1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I started sewing when I was 10 years old. It was my grand-mother who taught me .... As a child, I had a lot of difficulties because I wanted to have Barbie outfits for my dolls. My mother, thought it was very expensive to dress all my barbies collection ...loL...So as I never had enough allowance to buy them, my grand-mother decided to help me to create them and teach me sewing .... In fact, I was really more impatient to go to the beach than to sew and learn with her, but during 4 years and during the summer holidays, she never stopped teaching me all what she knew. After these few years, I never touched a sewing-machine until I started my own designs when Elyjah was born.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

I started selling on Ebay last spring. I was and am hugeLy addicted to Ebay and work on Ebay since 2002 ...before creating my own designs, I was a reseller. My passion was to buy a ton of pieces and mix’n match them to create some outfits ... One day my mother suggested to me to create my own designs with the knowledge I had since my childhood ...The bet was very risked, because my sewing lessons was so far away ! But I took the gauntlet and bought me my first of both sewing machines at my local Singer Store!

I made a couple of terrific outfits ....LoL ...and having one month of working I decided to put my first set on Ebay ! I was completly paralysed with fear ...With all the famous designers on Ebay, I was very afraid to miss all !!! My other problem was I’m French, and in France, I’m the only one person who is making this type of work. In other words, I began working in an area where most persons are American.

I’m selling actually on Ebay but also in a local store just near Chicago : Twinkle Tots. All the designs that are made for this store are unique and can be found only in this store !

I’m also working a lot on my website who should be online before this summer. My customers are waiting for it since a long time ....

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

Oh yes ...And I also remember my first customer who is always one of my faithful customers ! For my first design I used some truly beautiful fabrics, it was a mix of taffeta and wrinkled cotton ...All in a lovely cottage tone ... The halter dress was simple but sincerely cute, I also made a matched ruffled bloomer and a lovely vintage style hat ... I sold it for $25 and I was SO HAPPY ! LoL ...I didn’t find the pic, but I found the pic of my second set ...

3. How did you decide upon your name?

In fact my priority was to find a name that represented France but also a name that represents the Art of France .... My father is an artist and his mentor is Leonad De Vinci. Also, as my father instructed me the French Art but also been the engine of my “creative spirit” ...He always lead me on the way of the dream, the creation and the design. It was thereforce a blatancy to take the name MonaLisa Boutique. Thanks Dad to have given me the sketch of my imagination and to leave me grow up with. I made my labor of this present!

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

I’m in the Studio E group ... I love this group ! All the designers there were so complementary and I think this is our force. Each of us have an individual talent, and I love the our coeducation. Each human being is unique and when you share your unicity you can change the “shape of the things” and you learn each day that you can make a lot of things when you suscribe your ideas and convictions.

This group was created since a couple of weeks and i’m so proud to start this new story with all the others girls of the group. I love them all, I love their talents, their kindness and their listening. Thanks girls to make me more strong and creative day after day and to give me the chance to realize my dreams !

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

I love all ...I’m always testing some new designs. I’m in an eternal renewal, and I couldn’t strait on without the energy to always create something new... My favorite designs and my reputation are all the same based on some European Designs, my roots ! I love the colorful designs, ruffles and details. I need to make some “picky” creations ! My difference is also make on my french fabrics. I put all my energy to find the best and most exceptional fabrics I could find in this country.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers?

I love all ! I love touch the fabrics, I love find a beautiful fabric, buy it, put it on my sewing table and DREAM .... My creation starts at the moment of i’m starting my set. I never know what i’ll do at the moment where i buy the fabric! I always buy a fabric because I find it exceptional & unique ...After, with time, it will let me know what it must become!

My favorite fabrics are the printed european fabrics, the taffeta and all the “novelty” fabrics....

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

I’m complelty FUSSY ! All have a place in my sewing-room. Each box must contain its personal things ! LoL ! My fabrics are classified by style, colors and size on a big bookcase. Each piece of fabric must be bend at the same size ! I’m really organized and I hate when something is not at its place. My sewing-rooM is a sanctuary, it must be calm and litted up. When I’m in sewing-room, I forget all ....

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

MY CHILDREN !!! All what I can do is for them .... I’m always very close to them, and all what I can do in my free time is for them or with them. They are my breath of fresh air, my lifeblood nothing can be doNE without them !

Anything else you would like to add?

I would like to thanks first, my children. This is thanks to them if I have all the creativity and this life’s joys. I also would like to tell to my husband Dale, my father Gerard, my mother Patricia that I love them so much. Thanks to them for supporting me all the time and thanks for being my first fan-club !

I don’t forget you : Jenn, my heart-sister without who I won’t be here, thanks to always re-give me my missed trust .... I love you !

There is also all my group and all my friends that I would like to thanks ...You’re a lot and I can’t name you all ! But please, understand that I love You, and I couldn’t be here without you all. Thanks Amy from the Journal Modiste for your confidence toward me, this interview is the realization of a lot of dreams!

My last but not my smallest thanks will be for my customers. Thanks for your fidelity, your encouragements, your kindness and all the pretty momentS we passed together to chat and share our feelings. It’s always a pleasure to work with you. I would never stop this amazing story of happiness & continue to make you the best sets I can for your beautiful children.
