1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?
I began sewing when my daughter Hailey was born. I received a sewing machine as a gift from my mother in law and thought, what do I do with this? I did some sewing in high school Home Ec. It was nothing to brag about! I started to play around and make simple things like window treatments and pillows. I soon moved on to clothing and costumes. It just came natural to me. I am mostly self taught and have a lot of fun learning new ways to perfect my talent.
2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?
I began selling my designs in March of 2004. I only sell to eBay as of today, but am looking forward to opening my own website soon. Before I found the wonderful world of eBay, I had a very small in home part time daycare. Is there really life before eBay?? LOL
2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?
I wish I still had the pictures of my first outfit… it was a Raggedy Ann and Andy appliquéd summerall. It sold for $22.99 and I was so happy when my customer liked it! I was instantly hooked and have been creating ever since!!
3. How did you decide upon your name?
Nanny is a nickname for my 3 year old daughter, so I named it after her. My logo reflects my other daughter Hailey (she’s 9) because she is just a happy go lucky kid and like her mom, loves to shop! They are so fun, creative, unique, and the inspiration for my designs. It just seemed fitting to name it for them!
4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?
I belong to the RUNWAYGIRLS. I am so excited to be apart of such a talented group of women! I love sharing ideas and tips with others who have the same goals and dreams as I do! We all have an equal part in our group and we just have a lot of fun chatting, designing and dreaming of fun things to do for our group!!
5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?
Oh, I LOVE overalls!! It sounds corny, but to me a pair of overalls is like a blank canvas! I love to dream up different themes and play with many types of fabric combinations! You can do just about anything with a pair of overalls!
6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers?
I love all types of fabric and wouldn’t even know where to start! It just all depends on my mood and the “feel’ I want my outfit to have. I love vintage, mod, Amy Butler (of course!!), Michael Miller, Alexander Henry……….. the list goes on!!!
7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!
I do most of my sewing after my girls go to bed. I try to squeeze in some sewing time here and there during the day… but most of the time it is at night. As for my fabric, I have an old dresser full of neatly folded fabric and lots of clear Rubbermaid containers for all of my appliqué scraps etc… I have a table set up as a shipping station with my tissue, boxes and such. I like to keep everything neat. I feel very stressed when my office is messy… it feels like I have so much more to do! BUT…If I am in the middle of an outfit…. Scraps are everywhere and I am covered in threads!! LOL
8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?
I love to get out of the house! LOL I love home interior design and just about anything that involves being creative. I love to spend time with my husband and kids going for walks, bike riding, or just hanging out. My hubby makes fabulous popcorn and we love watching movies.
9. Anything else you would like to add?
Yes, I am just so grateful to all of the people who have purchased my designs. I truly love what I do and feel very lucky to have a job like this!
