1. When did you get started sewing and creating? Who taught you?

I remember my grandmother & mother sewing a little when I was young. But it was my high school home economics teacher that really inspired me. She created some of the most amazing things. Then my first “real” job during my senior year of high school was at a fabric store – that is where my real addiction started. Within 6 months of working there I was giving serger lessons. My fabric habit ate up my entire paycheck – which wasn’t much being that minimum wage was $3.35 an hour! By the time I graduated from high school I owned my own serger and sewing machine and boxes of fabric. My husband should have seen then and there I had a problem and run for his life! My sister is 10 yrs younger than me – so I would come home from work and stay up all night (some things never change) making a new outfit for her to wear to school the next day – kids clothes were my first love to create. Second is Costumes – Halloween is my favorite time of year.

2. When did you start selling your designs on eBay? Do you sell anywhere else besides eBay, if so where? (example, web site, local boutique) What did you do before eBay?

I have been selling my designs on eBay just a little over a year. Since my son was born I had always wanted to do something from home. I had occasionally sold stuff on eBay and about 1 ½ yrs ago I stumbled across the boutique world – and I thought – Perfect!

2a. Do you remember the first outfit you sold on eBay. Do you have a picture? What was it and what did it sell for?

Yes, it was a little fall set with a top with a sheer skirt, flared pants and a newsboy cap – I have a picture yes. I don’t remember what it sold for.

3. How did you decide upon your name?

In college one of my husbands friends gave me a nickname Spendy Wendy - it just has stuck over the years – so I just thought SpendyStyle had a nice ring to it.

4. Do you belong to any boutique group and if so which one? How did you get started in that group? What do you like most about your particular group?

I belong to The Not So Plain Jaynes (search Boutique Jaynes). My friend Nikki (*baby_bijoux*) and I started the Jaynes last April. The girls in our group are so supportive of each other – since life doesn’t always deal us roses – it is nice to have someone to talk to. Everyone there is so supportive of each other – weather we are having a bad day, a personal celebration or a sewing emergency – we can always count on our fellow Jaynies for encouragement, laughs & and a shoulder to cry on! I know before I got involved with the Jaynes adult conversation is something I so longed for – I am so honored to be associated with the girls in my group.

5. What is your favorite thing to create? (example: vintage style dresses, totes, overalls, etc) Why?

I love creating sets that I would like to wear with a little bit of childhood innocence thrown in.

6. What are your favorite types of fabrics or fabric designers?

I am really addicted to quilt shop quality fabric. I know I spend a lot more money on it but the finished product is so nice. Hey I wouldn’t live up to my name if I shopped entirely at the discount rack would I?

7. Where and when do you do most of your sewing? Are you neat about it or do you have fabric covering the floor!

We just moved from a 4bd home to a 3bd – although we were in a track home (cookie cutter) – now we are on an acre – the kids have so much more room to run – but I lost my sewing room. I now share my space with the washer & dryer – so before in the old house I found my self drowning in scraps, threads and whatever else – I could just walk out of the room and close the door. This new space is smaller so I can’t have it messy – makes me crazy.

8. What other things do you enjoy besides sewing?

My husband and I are really into cars. We restore classic Chevrolet’s together – I am the interior person – he is the body/engine man. We finished a 1969 Camaro SS last year and are getting ready to work on our 1951 Chevrolet Pickup. We love to spend time with our kids and are constantly amazed on how fast they are growing **sniff**. Our current home was also somewhat of a fixer-upper so weekends are also filled with some sort of home improvement project.

9. Anything else you would like to add?

I am so thankful I found eBay. The friendships I have formed have been invaluable to me. There are so many talented women on eBay and I truly believe we are an inspiration to each other to do our very best. Nothing means more to me than to get an email from a fellow designer complimenting my work - sometimes you feel all alone out there – and it just makes my day to see that someone like me can see the effort I put into my designs and to go the extra mile to compliment me on it. I always take the time to drop someone a line and tell her WOW! I believe that is so important – whether that person is in your group or not - as we are all in some ways a huge family doing what we love to do.
